St. Anthony, Altamont, BSE Claim Girls Wins

Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Newton in varsity girls basketball action Thursday evening, 40-36.

The Bulldogs trailed Newton 13-9 after the opening quarter. The Eagles' Eliza Bierman tallied seven points in the quarter. Clare McHugh kept the Bulldogs in the game with six points.

Newton continued its run with an 8-7 second quarter to lead 21-16 at halftime.

St. Anthony then started a comeback with a 12-9 third period as five players scored. St. Anthony then finished off with a 12-6 final quarter to pull out the win.

McHugh led the way for St. Anthony with 14 points while Meg Richards added 12 and Riley Guy was on the verge of double figures with nine. Richards finished with seven rebounds while Sydney Gibson had six and Abby Repking five. Shea Kinkelaar and Guy finished with two assists each. The Bulldogs improve to 8-4 on the season.

"Great comeback in the second half," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We finally turned it up a notch defensively and then our offense followed suit."

Newton was led by Bierman with 14 and Brooke Jansen with 12. The Eagles drop to 2-9 on the season.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest, 48-19.

At Cowden

Altamont stepped out to the early lead and went on to beat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 73-47 in a National Trail Conference encounter Thursday.

The Indians edged out to a 17-11 opening quarter and led 40-26 at halftime.

Four Altamont players finished in double figures. Brooke Runge led the way with 18 points while Tinley Mette chipped in with 13, Rachel Jackman 11 and Mary Guse 10. The Indians hit 48 percent from the field and were 11 of 18 at the line for 61 percent. Altamont improved to 5-0 in the NTC and 11-1 overall.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson with 15 and Tabitha Endsley with eight. Robertson had three rebounds, four assists and four steals. Kylee Bertin chipped in with three assists and four steals. Lauren Wojcik and Endsley had four rebounds each.

The Indians also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 53-29 to improve to 4-0 in the conference, 7-0 overall.

At Cowden

At Neoga

This was a close one but not until the second half. Brownstown/St. Elmo edged Neoga by two points, 61-59 in National Trail Conference action Thursday.

Neoga ran off to a 17-9 opening quarter lead and led 27-16 at halftime. BSE then came back with a 31-17 third quarter and held off the Indians in the final period for the win.

Claire Wilhour and Olivia Campbell provided the scoring punch for the winners with 24 and 23 points respectively.

Neoga was led by Olivia Titus with 14, Kylee Phillips with 12 and Lydia Gentry with 11. Neoga drops to 6-6 overall.

Neoga claimed the junior varsity contest, 26-16.

Webber Township (Bluford) tallied a 54-35 non-conference win over South Central Thursday evening.

The Cougars held a 23-16 halftime lead but Webber Township came back with a 22-7 third period and that was the game.

Leading South Central were Katlyn Hilmes with 15 and Sydnee Garrett with 11. The Cougars fall to 2-6 on the season.
