NEWTON -- With a 20-7 opening quarter, Effingham St. Anthony High School went on to down Newton 73-42 in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs' Jaccob Dust, a 6-foot-7 junior, scored 10 of the Bulldogs' 20 points in the quarter. Dust finished with 20 to lead St. Anthony.

St. Anthony had a 46-21 halftime lead. Also in double figures was Bryson Wall with 10 points. Luke Ludwig and Aaron Webb were on the verge of double figures with nine each. Nine players scored in the contest for the Bulldogs.

Newton was led by Kyle Schafer with 14 and Justin Zumbahlen with 11. Jarrett Tharp chipped in with nine. The Eagles drop to 3-5.

The two teams made 19 three-pointers in the contest. Newton had 10 with Schafer knocking in four and Tharp and J. Zumbahlen three each. St. Anthony had nine led by Webb with three.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest, 65-47. Logan Antrim scored 20 and Aaron Webb 15.

At Neoga

Casey-Westfield came calling and remained unbeaten on the season with a 70-61 victory over Neoga in a non-conference matchup Tuesday.

The Warriors edged out to a 20-18 lead and held that same two-point lead at halftime, 33-31. Casey-Westfield then had a 37-30 second half for the winning margin.

Richards led the way for the Warriors with 28 while Livingston added 16 points and Hosselton had 15. C-W improved to 8-0.

Neoga was led by four players in double figures. Mitchell Cornell led the way with 16 points followed by Reece Johnson 14, Levi Peters 13 and Trevor Roy 11.

At St. Elmo

The St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Tournament opened play with two games Tuesday evening.

Cumberland handed Ramsey a 65-47 loss. The Pirates took a 35-25 halftime lead then had a 30-22 second half.

Zach Wolke, a senior, led the way with 33 points. He scored 10 in the opening quarter and 11 in the second period.

Also in double figures for the Pirates were Brennyn Cutts with 13 and Myles Gerhardt with 11.

In the second contest, Mulberry Grove edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 45-40.

The Hatchets stepped out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead but Mulberry Grove came back with a 16-9 second period run to lead 25-23 at halftime. The Aces then had a 20-17 second half for the win.

C. Latham tallied 20 for the winners while W. Criner added 12. The Aces are now 8-0.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Jackson Miller with 17 points. The Hatchets drop to 4-5 on the season.

The tourney continues tonight as Vandalia faces Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 6:15 p.m. followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown taking on Patoka at 7:45.
