TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School edged ahead 13-7 in the opening quarter and went on for a 56-23 Apollo Conference girls basketball win over Taylorville Thursday evening.

The Hearts held a 31-11 lead at halftime then had a 19-8 third quarter.

Abby Weis scored 17 points for the Hearts while Natalie Carie added 11. Miranda Fox led the way in rebounding with six.

"The kids really played well tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "I was concerned after Monday's game, but we really bounced back. Both teams have had a tough week. We moved and shared the ball and made great decisions all night. Our defense and rebounding were excellent. Really good Apollo road win."

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thursday evening and claimed a 60-37 National Trail Conference victory.

The Bulldogs' Shea Kinkelaar scored seven points in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs took a 14-5 lead. Clare McHugh stepped in with seven points in the second period and the Bulldogs went to 29-21. Jaelyn Robertson and Madison Cherry tallied five points each for CHBC.

St. Anthony pushed that eight point lead to 16 going into the final quarter and finished out with a 16-9 run.

McHugh finished with26 points while Kinkelaar, Riley Guy and Meg Richards scored eight each for the Bulldogs.

CHBC was led by Robertson with 17 and Cherry with 13. Robertson and Lauren Wojcik led in rebounds with six each. Robertson and Hailey Persinger had four assists each. Robertson also led in steals with five and blocked shots with three.

"Great game by Clare tonight on the offensive end," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "It was great to have the whole team back with Shea in the lineup."

Richards added 10 rebounds and five assists. McHugh had five assists and three steals. The Bulldogs are 3-1 in the NTC, 7-3 overall.

St. Anthony claimed the junior varsity win, 36-21.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis pounded visiting St. Joseph-Ogden, 72-39 in action Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes ran off to a 25-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Three players hit double digits for the Shoes. Lexie Niebrugge scored 22, 15 coming in that opening quarter run. Claire Bushur added 17 and Olivia Niemerg 11. Bushur had eight rebounds while Morgan Mette added six. Niebrugge had four steals.

Altamont had a big scoring opening quarter and went on to down Okaw Valley 73-22 in action Thursday.

The Indians leaped out to a 24-5 first period lead and led 46-10 at halftime.

Brooke Runge and Rachel Jackman tallied 14 points each while Leah Mayhaus added 13 for the winners.

South Central edged Ramsey in a non-conference matchup Friday, 55-53.

Ramsey held a 12-9 opening quarter lead before the Cougars tied at 23-23 at halftime. Ramsey moved ahead 38-33 going into the final period. South Central then rallied with a 22-15 run to pull out the win.

Sydney Garrett tallied 18 points for the winners while Laney Webster added 17.

Newton picked up a victory over Robinson in action Thursday, 40-36.

Robinson led 10-9 in the first period but Newton moved ahead 22-17 at halftime then had a 10-9 third quarter.

Brooke Jansen and Whitney Zumbahlen scored 17 points each for the Eagles. Zumbahlen had seven rebounds while Jansen had six. Allison Harris led in assists with four. Harris and Claire Carr had two steals each.

Newton improves to 1-1 in the conference, 2-7 overall.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 37-29. to improve to 1-1 in the conference, 3-2 overall.
