Four Area Teams Advance to 8-A Girls State

Four area junior high girls basketball teams have advanced to state tournaments after picking up victories Wednesday evening.

 

Class 81A Pana Sacred Heart Sectional

Sigel St. Michael edged Pana Sacred Heart at the Pana Sacred Heart Sectional, 28-25 Wednesday.

The Sharpshooters improved to 19-5 on the season and will compete at the 8-1A State Tournament at Clinton Junior HIgh School. St. Michael will face Monmouth ICS (24-0) in the first game at 10 a.m. Other members of the field include Ottawa Wallace, Carrollton St. John, Washington St. Patrick, Gifford, Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell and the winner of Sectional 6.

Class 8-2A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional

Two area teams were squaring off at the St. Anthony Sectional Wednesday evening.

North Clay (Louisville) came up with a 34-27 win over Altamont.

North Clay is now 20-3 on the season and will meet Nokomis at 10 a.m. at the Class 2A State Tournament at Havana High School. Other members of the field are Paris Crestwood, Elmwood, Colfax Ridgeview, Mendon Unity, Havana and Bourbonnais St. George.

Class 8-3A Tuscola East Prairie Sectional

Teutopolis came out a 21-17 winner over host Tuscola East Prairie in action Wednesday at the Class 8-3A Sectional.

Tuscola took an 8-6 opening quarter lead and led 13-9 at halftime. T-town started a comeback in the third quarter to pull within one point and then had a 7-2 final period.

Emily Konkel tallied eight to lead the Wooden Shoes who improved to 24-3.

T-town advances to the Class 8-3A State Tournament at Germantown Hills Middle School where they will face Germantown Hills (23-) at 10 a.m. Other members of the field are Peru Parkside, Quincy St. Peter, Peotone, Hillsboro, Dunlap Valley and Mackinaw Dee-Mack.

Class 8-4A Mahomet-Seymour Sectional

Effingham came out the winner at the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional by downing the host squad, 18-9.

Effingham trailed Mahomet-Seymour 6-4 at halftime then came roaring back with a 10-0 third period count.

Ella Niebrugge and Annie Frost scored six points each for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs improved to 21-2 on the season and will head to the Class 4A State Tournament at Macon Meridian High School Saturday.

Effingham will meet Frankfort Summit Hill (21-4) at 1 p.m. in the third game of the day. Other schools competing will be Shorewood Troy, Arlington Heights Thomas, Rochester, Lansing Memorial, East Peoria Central and East St. Louis Lincoln.
