Lady Hearts Defeat Lady Bulldogs Saturday, T-town Falls

In a battle between the two city girls basketball teams, the Effingham Lady Hearts defeated the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs Saturday afternoon 42-23. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Effingham's defense helped force St. Anthony into several early turnovers that helped shape the course of the game. Effingham led 10-6 after one quarter and then outscored St. Anthony 12-4 in the second period to lead 22-10 at halftime.

A 10-4 Effingham edge put the Lady Hearts up 32-14 after three quarters. A 10-9 fourth quarter left Effingham with the 19-point edge.

Effingham shot 49% from the field, 21 of 43 including 2 of 8 threes. St. Anthony shot 34%, 10 of 29 including 3 of 8 threes. Interestingly, neither team scored from the free throw line; St. Anthony was 0 for 3 and Effingham did not shoot a free throw. The Hearts committed just seven turnovers, none in the third quarter. St. Anthony turned the ball over 19 times, but just six times in the second half. Effingham had a 19-13 rebound edge.

The Lady Hearts' Natalie Carie led all scorers with 12 points; she was the only player in the game in double figures, hitting five of nine shots. Also for Effingham: Abby Weis eight, leaving her four from 1,000 for her career, Miranda Fox six, and Skyler Schafer, Madison Buscher, Kiyah Kuhlman and Jessie Herboth each with four points. Reese Jones had seven points to lead St. Anthony. Also for the Lady Bulldogs: Sydney Gibson four, Clare McHugh and Izzy Hakman each with three, and Riley Guy, Abby Repking and Meg Richards each with two points.

Effingham is now 6-0 on the season, while St. Anthony is 6-2.

Effingham won the JV game 42-33 in overtime. St. Anthony's Riley Guy led all scorers with 22 points. For Effingham, Hayley Diveley scored 11 points and Taylor Armstrong had 10 points.

At Danville

Teutopolis fell to Danville Schlarman in action Saturday, 39-26.

Schlarman took a 15-9 opening quarter lead and led 27-15 at halftime. Schlarman had a slight one point edge in the second half.

The Wooden Shoes were led by Claire Bushur with 11 points and seven rebounds.
