Effingham, North Clay Win Eighth-Grade Girls Regionals

Effingham captured the Class 8-4A Urbana Regional championship.

Effingham Junior High School edged Charleston 28-27 to claim the championshp of the Class 8-4A Urbana Girls Basketball Regional Thursday evening.

 

Charleston took a 3-0 first quarter lead but the two teams were tied at 8-8 at halftime. The Mustangs moved ahead 16-14 going into the final period. Charleston came back with a 13-12 final period only to fall short.

Ella Niebrugge scored 13 points for the winners while Marissa Allie chipped in with six.

Effingham is now 20-2 on the season and will travel to Mahomet-Seymour Wednesday, December 5 to face the winner of the Mahomet-Seymour Regional, either Champaign Jefferson or Mahomet-Seymour. Those two teams play tonight.

Class 8-2A Palestine Regional

North Clay (Louisville) was named the champion of the Palestine Regional after picking up a victory Thursday evening.

North Clay downed host Palestine, 37-11. North Clay advances to the Effingham St. Anthony Sectional and will take on the winner of the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Regional Wednesday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. CHBC and Altamont square off for the championship of that regional tonight at 6.

 

Class 8-2A Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Regional

This regional will come to a close tonight at 6 as Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meets Altamont at 6 p.m. for the title.

 

Class 8-1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

Sigel St. Michael and Dieterich advanced to the championship of the Sacred Heart Regional with victories Thursday evening.

In the first game of the evening, St. Michael pounded Cisne, 33-6. The Sharpshooters took a 20-2 halftime lead.

Kaylee Niebrugge led the winners with 14 points while Taylor Bueker added seven.

Dieterich trailed Oakland Lake Crest 10-8 after the opening quarter but moved ahead 15-13 at halftime and held a 23-15 lead going into the final period.

Morgan Esker led Dieterich with 10 points while Heaven Kinnison scored eight.

St. Michael and Dieterich will meet for the championship tonight at 6.
