Bulldogs Pick Up Victory, Area Girls Roundup

WINDSOR -- Trailing by nine points heading into the final quarter, things looked bleak for Effingham St. Anthony in high school girls basketball action at Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Thursday evening.

But the Bulldogs put together a 21-4 final quarter surge to pull out a 42-34 National Trail Conference victory.

"We played an unbelievable fourth quarter," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Our offense finally got in attack mode and then the shots and the free throws started to fall. When the shots fell, the defensive intensity rose about 10 notches."

The Bulldogs held a 9-6 opening quarter lead as Riley Guy tallied six of those points. But the Hatchets came roaring back with a 13-4 second period when Megan Schlechte got rolling, knocking in five baskets. WSS continued its momentum in the third quarter with an 11-8 run.

But in the final period, Clare McHugh scored eight, Meg Richards five and Reese Jones and taylor Beesley four each.

Richards finished with 11 to lead the Bulldogs while McHugh added 10. Guy had four assists, McHugh three steals and Richards eight rebounds.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by M. Schlechte with 20 points and Hannah Hayes with seven.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the NTC, 6-1 overall and are back in action in a 1 p.m. contest against Effingham.

At St. Elmo

Brownstown/St. Elmo tallied a 55-25 National Trail Conference win over Dieterich Thursday evening.

BSE and Dieterich were tied at 10-10 after the opening quarter. BSE then got untracked and went on a 22-4 tear and never looked back.

Three players hit double figures for BSE. Olivia Campell scored 19 while Claire Wilhour added 18 and Natalie Oberlink 16.

Diteerich was led by J. Robards with 13 points.

Casey-Westfield held the early lead but Altamont rallied and went on a run for a 53-29 non-conference victory Thursday.

The Warriors led 12-9 after the opening quarter before Altamont edged into a 20-19 lead at halftime. The Indians then went on a 33-10 second half run.

Mayhaus tallied 11 while Ti. Mette and Jackson scored nine each for the winners who improve to 7-1 on the season.

The Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis took charge early in this one and went on for a 48-20 win over host Flora Thursday.

T-town stepped out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and led 28-9 at halftime.

L. Niebrugge tallied 14 points while M. Mette added nine and C. Bushur eight. Niebrugge led in assists with three and had four steals. She also pulled down four rebounds. Niemerg led in steals with five. M. Mette and Bushur had four rebounds each.

Webber Township (Bluford) played host to South Central and sent the visiting Cougars home with a 62-38 non-conference defeat Thursday.

Webber Township took a 21-14 halftime lead then had a 15-8 third period.

Two players scored in double figures for South Central. Sydnee Garrett tallied 13 points while Katlyn Hilmes added 11. The Cougars drop to 1-3 on the season.

The Tigers swept out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and led 44-13 at halftime.

North Clay (Louisville) edged Neoga, 61-58 in National Trail Conference action Thursday.

Neoga held a 15-14 opening quarter lead but the Cardinals came back to lead 25-23 at halftime. North Clay continued with a 15-13 third period before Neoga made a comeback bid in the final period only to fall short.

North Clay had three players hit double digits. Lovett lead the way with 21 while Coble added 16 and Lewis 11.

Neoga was led by Mary Hill with 16 and Kylee Phillips with 15.. Olivia Titus chipped in with nine. The Indians drop to 5-4 on the season.

Liberty Dunaway led the way for Cumberland with eight poitns.
