Lady Hearts Open Apollo Season w/Win over Mattoon

The Effingham Lady Hearts improved to 5-0 on the young season, opening Apollo Conference play with a win over Mattoon 55-39. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham exploded out of the gate and led 19-12 after the first quarter. Things slowed in the second quarter, with Mattoon outscoring the Hearts 9-8. Effingham pushed the lead to as many as 13 in the period before Mattoon cut the deficit to six at the break.

Effingham outscored Mattoon 11-8 in the third period and led 38-29 before opening the throttle in the fourth period, outscoring the Green Wave 17-10 to win by 16 points.

Effingham shot 48% from the field, making 20 of 42 shots including 4 of 15 threes. The Hearts made 11 of 20 foul shots and grabbed 27 rebounds, committing 12 turnovers.

Mattoon made 15 of 44 shots for 34% including 6 of 17 threes. The Wave made just 3 of 10 free throws, turned the ball over 15 times and pulled down 24 rebounds.

Carsyn Fearday led Effingham with 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting. Fearday was 5 of 6 at the line and grabbed five rebounds. Natalie Carie just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Abby Weis scored 12 points and is now 12 points away from 1,000 for her career. Also for Effingham, Miranda Fox scored eight points, Skyler Schafer five, and Madison Buscher two.

Freshman Mallory Ramage led Mattoon with 21 points, 15 in the first half.

While the Hearts have won their first five games, Mattoon is now 5-2.

Effingham came from behind to win their first JV game of the season, 44-41 over Mattoon. Callie Feldhake led Effingham with 10 points, while Taylor Armstrong scored eight and Sawyer Althoff had seven.

Effingham's next action is Saturday afternoon, a game against crosstown rival St. Anthony. The action at Effingham High School will feature a JV game at 1pm followed by the varsity contest about 2:30pm.
