NEWTON -- Effingham High School opened its season at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament with a 66-42 win over Altamont Monday evening.

The Hearts stepped out to a 21-11 opening quarter lead and led 34-19 at halftime.

Three players hit double digits for EHS. Carsyn Fearday led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals. Natalie Carie chipped in with 13 points and five boards while Abby Weis added 13 points.

"It was nice to get a game under our belt as we are tired of practicing against ourselves every day," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "It was a good start over a very good Altamont team. We played pretty good overall. Wacked away with some things we definitely have to do better.

"Carsyn and Miranda and the bench got us through the first half and then we got all involved in the second half."

Altamont was led by Schultz with 12 points.

In the second game, Flora edged Newton, 41-39.

Newton held an 8-2 opening quarter lead and led 20-14 at halftime. Flora came back with a 27-19 second half to pull out the victory.

Jansen led Newton with 12 points.
