Indians, Pirates Pick Up Cland Tourney Wins

TOLEDO -- Host Cumberland and Altamont were opening round winners at the Cumberland Boys Turkey Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The tourney was played at the high school and junior high school. At the high school location, Charleston defeated Newton, 77-41 while Cumberland downed Dieterich, 69-58.

In the opening contest, Charleston stepped out to a 25-12 opening quarter lead and never looked back in the win over Newton.

Three players hit double figures for the Trojans, Finley with 21, Miller with 16 and Simpson with 14.

Newton was led by Jack Finn with 14 and Kyle Schafer with 10.

In the second game, the host squad handed Dieterich a 69-58 loss.

Cumberland held a 35-31 halftime lead and led by that same four-point margin going into the final quarter. In the final period, the Pirates had a 15-8 run.

Gerhardt tallied 27 while Wolke added 23 in the one-two scoring punch for the Pirates.

Dieterich was led by Collin Hartke with 22 and Matthew Hunzinger with 11.

In games at the junior high, Casey-Westfield beat Oblong, 67-26 while Altamont won over Edwards County (Albion), 59-51.

In the Altamont game, the Indians edged ahead 9-8 in the first quarter then had a 20-11 second period, due in large part to six of six at the line.

The Indians continued their hot scoring from the free throw line in the second period and finished with 21 of 26.

Briggs led the way for the Indians with 26 points. He connected on eight field goals, including one three-pointer, and was nine of 10 at the line. Jahraus chipped in with 15 and hit four field goals, including a three-pointer and was six of nine at the line.

Action in the tournament tonight features Dieterich against Charleston at 6 and Cumberland meeting Newton at 7:30 at the high school. In play at the junior high, Casey-Westfield faces Edwards County at 6 followed by Altamont taking on Oblong at 7:30.
