BEECHER CITY -- Three games opened play at the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Neoga tallied a 40-30 victory over Dieterich in the first game. Neoga held a 15-13 halftime lead then had an 11-3 third quarter run.

Johnson scored 14 for the winners while Richards added 10. Dieterich was led by Esker with 17.

In the second game, Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor claimed a 24-10 win over Effingham Sacred Heart.

SSW led 13-4 at halftime and had an 8-4 third quarter. Weeden scored eight and Kinkelaar seven for the winners.

Sacred Heart was led by Helmink with six points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo finished out the evening with a 37-26 win over South Central.

BSE took a 10-2 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Stine tallied 10 while Whitehead chipped in with seven for the winners. South Central was led by Webster with10.

The tournament continues tonight with Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Neoga at 5:30, Sigel St. Michael facing Altamont at 6:45 and North Clay (Louisville) meeting Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor at 8.

At Flora

Effingham St. Anthony split wins with host Flora Tuesday evening.

The Bullpups won the seventh-grade encounter, 36-16. St. Anthony led 18-6 at halftime. Geen and Niemeyer tallied eight points each while S. Kibler added seven for the Bullpups.

In eighth-grade action, Flora went overtime to edge St. Anthony, 28-27.

St. Anthony held a 13-6 halftime lead but Flora came back to move ahead 16-15 in the third quarter. Behnke scored all seven of Flora's fourth quarter points and the score was tied at 23-23 sending the game into overtime. Osborne scored three and Behnke scored two for Flora in the overtime.

St. Anthony was led by Faber, Willenborg and Fearday with six points each.
