T-town Wins, CHBC Falls in Highland Tournament; Area Roundup

HIGHLAND -- The Highland Girls Basketball Tournament opened competition Saturday and Teutopolis picked up a victory while Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City suffered a loss.

Hillsboro 55, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 53

This one was neck-and-neck all the way with Hillsboro pulling out the two-point win.

CHBC took a 16-12 opening quarter lead but Hillsboro came back to lead 28-27 at halftime. CHBC knotted the score at 40-40 going into the final period. Hillsboro then had a 15-13 run for the win.

Shelby Gray led the winners with 27 points while Kennah White tallied 11. CHBC was led by  Micah Jones with 29 points and 18 rebounds. Ava Paruleski chipped in with nine points.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City drops into consolation play where the Hornets will face Troy Triad at 4 p.m. today.

Teutopolis 46, O'Fallon 25

Teutopolis edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 22-18 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes then had a 7-2 third quarter run and put the game away in the final period with a 17-5 tally.

T-town was led by Madeline Haertke with 16 points. O'Fallon was led by Jesmine Bonds with seven.

T-town advances in the winner bracket and will face Breese Mater Dei at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Nashville beat Troy Triad 56-19, Belleville West downed Belleville Althoff 40-31, Carlyle defeated Salem 51-36, Breese Central bounced Vandalia 62-22, Okawville edged Highland 44-41 and Breese Mater Dei claimed a 55-24 win over Nokomis.

LITTLE ILLINI CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

In the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday, Marshall blasted Robinson 80-18, Flora won over Casey-Westfield 48-27, Olney downed Palestine/Hutsonville 57-26 and Newton downed Red Hill (Bridgeport) 52-41.

In the Newton contest, the Eagles edged out to a 9-8 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 22-16 at halftime. Red Hill came back with a 14-8 run in the third quarter to knot the score at 30-30. Both teams scored 11 points in the final quarter sending the game into overtime where Newton had an 11-0 run for the win.

Morgan Swingler scored 17 for the winners while Megan Jansen added 11. Andrea Cartright and Swingler had six rebounds each. Swingler and Amy Bierman had three steals each. Red Hill was led by Taylor Paulin with 11.

Newton is now 15-7 on the season and will face Olney at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Marshall will take on Flora at 8 p.m. Tuesday. In consolation bracket action today, the games will be played at the higher seed at 7 p.m. Edwards County (Albion) will travel to Palestine/Hutsonville, Oblong heads to Robinson, Casey-Westfield hosts Cumberland and Lawrenceville is at Red Hill (Bridgeport).
