St. Anthony Girls Win, Wooden Shoes Boys Win, Bulldogs Boys Lose at St. Anthony Shootout

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs got the Hayden's Hoop Shoot underway Saturday at St. Anthony's Enlow Center with a 42-33 win over the Flora Wolfgals.  The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes edged the Mt. Vernon Rams 48-46 in their boys contest.  Olney East Richland downed the St. Anthony Bulldogs 66-56 to close the day's action.  The games were heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

St. Anthony 42, Flora 33

The Lady Bulldogs' game was a battle.  St. Anthony led start-to-finish, but Flora hung tough throughout the game despite ice-cold shooting.

The Bulldogs got the lead up to 13 points at one point in the first half, leading 14-8 after one quarter and 22-14 at halftime.  Flora shot a little better in the second half and pulled back to within 30-25 after three quarters, but the Bulldogs outscored the Wolfgals 12-8 in the final stanza to post the nine-point win.

St. Anthony hit 38% of its shots, making 14 of 37 including three of five three-point tries.  The Bulldogs also cashed in from the foul line, making 11 of 15 shots.  24 turnovers were a problem, but St. Anthony overcame some of that with a 32-17 rebounding edge.

Flora made just 13 of 48 shots for 27% including two of 18 from three-point range.

Makayla Walsh and Kate Richards shared scoring honors for St. Anthony with 11 points apiece while Megan Nuxoll scored 10 points.  Richards had a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds.  Five other Bulldogs scored two points...Lexie Niebrugge, Melissa Bushur, Morgan Gardewine, Lauren Wendt and Maggie Mumm.

Freshman Crimson Jones led Flora with 17 points.

St. Anthony improved to 11-7 on the season; Flora fell to 12-6.

Teutopolis 48, Mt. Vernon 46

Cody Will scored his only points of the game on a layup just ahead of the final buzzer to give the Wooden Shoes a two-point win over the Rams.  T-Town's only other lead in the game was 2-0 to start the game.

Mt. Vernon controlled the early tempo but switched to an uptempo game to counteract the Shoes' height advantage.  The Rams led 17-11 after the first quarter, 27-24 at halftime, and 40-37 after three quarters.  The Shoes finally tied the game 42-42 in the fourth quarter, but Mt. Vernon quickly regrouped and regained a three-point lead before T-Town came back to tie the game 46-46.  With 2.5 seconds remaining and the length of the floor to cover after a Mt. Vernon turnover, the Shoes got the ball downcourt to Will who streaked to the basket for the winning layup.

The Shoes hit 19 of 45 shots from the field for 42% and made six of nine from the line while turning the ball over just six times.  T-Town pulled down 18 rebounds and made four of 13 three-point tries.

Mt. Vernon made 55% of its shots, 18 of 33, but made just eight of 13 free throws.  The Rams only committed eight turnovers and grabbed 22 rebounds while making two of six three-point attempts.

Kyle Pruemer led Teutopolis with 19 points on seven of nine shooting including two three-pointers.  Derek Smith added 14 points, freshman Brett Mette scored eight, Reed Hardiek three, and Devin Falbe and Will two each.

Teutopolis improved to 12-3 on the season, while Mt. Vernon slipped to 8-7 on the campaign.

Olney East Richland 66, St. Anthony 56

Olney led throughout their game against St. Anthony, although the Bulldogs made a run at the end to make it exciting. 

Olney led 15-10 after one quarter, 31-20 at halftime, and 49-37 after three quarters.  The Tigers had a 15-point lead at one point before the Bulldogs started a fourth quarter surge to get within six and possess the ball.  Two consecutive turnovers, though, led to four points for Olney and the Tigers had their 10-point victory.

Both teams shot well...St. Anthony 26 of 53 for 49% and Olney 23 of 44 for 52%.  The Bulldogs only shot three foul shots and made them all, while Olney was 12 of 17 at the foul line.  Olney only committed seven turnovers to 14 for St. Anthony, and the Tigers despite getting outrebounded 29 to 13.  St. Anthony made just one three-pointer in five tries while Olney hit on eight of 17 three-point attempts.

Bulldogs Jake Schuette and John Goeckner combined for 44 points, 23 from Schuette and 21 from Goeckner, but St. Anthony only got 12 points from the rest of the squad...Jason Vogel and Neil Williams with four each, and Andrew Gardewine and Alex Hoelscher with two apiece.

Olney sophomore Tate Nohren led all scorers with 29 points.  Nohren is the son of former Effingham High School basketball star Ty Nohren and is the grandson of highly successful player and coach Monty Nohren.
