A 23-8 third quarter edge propelled the Effingham Hearts to a 57-39 win Friday night over the Paris Tigers.  The Apollo Conference clash at Paris was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

The first few minutes of the game saw Paris take a 5-0 lead, but the Hearts scored the final eight points of the quarter to take a three-point advantage.  The second quarter was a 14-14 standoff as each team had a brief flurry of points and a brief flurry of turnovers, but the Hearts were up 22-19 at the break.

Effingham made some defensive changes at the half, though, and came out for the third quarter with a little more spring in their step and it made all the difference.  Josh Stombaugh scored 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter and Effingham put 23 points on the board in the period to take a 45-27 lead heading into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter was pretty much a standoff as each team scored 12 points.

Effingham shot the ball well, making 24 of 45 attempts for 53%.  Effingham only shot six foul shots, making four of them.  The Hearts had 11 turnovers in the first half, but trimmed the number to just four in the second half.  Effigham pulled down 31 rebounds and made three of 12 three-point tries.

Paris was held to 34% shooting, making just 15 shots of 44 taken last night.

Hunter Keith and Josh Stombaugh shared scoring honors with 12 points each, Jake Stombaugh had 10 points, Clark Williamson six, Leighton Lark and Marcus Robinson four points each, Alex Carie three and Trenton Frey two points.

Effingham improved to 9-4 on the season and remained undefeated in the Apollo Conference with a game at Salem on the schedule next Friday night.  Paris slipped to 5-10 on the season.

Effingham won the JV game 60-33.  Isaac Foreman and Kennan Mahaffey each scored 10 points to lead a balanced Hearts' attack.  The JV Hearts have suffered just one loss this season.
