St. A, CHBC Claim Victories in Girls Action; Area Roundup

SHELBYVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony picked up a girls basketball victory over host Shelbyville 45-24 in action Thursday evening.

Shelbyville edged out to a 6-4 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony got untracked in the second period with a 17-4 run. Makayla Walsh, a 5-foot-6 junior, connected on three field goals and was four of six at the line for 10 points.

The two squads played to an 11-11 third period tie before the Bulldogs came out fired up to make a 13-3 final period run.

Walsh was the lone player in the contest in double figures with 14. Lauren Wendt chipped in with nine points.

The Bulldogs also claimed the junior varsity contest, 36-12.

St. Anthony will be back in action Saturday in its own shootout, taking on Flora at 11 a.m.

At Sullivan

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City motored out to a 27-19 halftime lead and went on for a 56-45 non-conference win.

Micah Jones continued her hot scoring with 20 points, connecting on seven field goals and six of eight at the free throw line. Also in double figures was Ava Paruleski with 17. Paruleski banged home five three-pointers and was two of two at the line.

Sullivan was led by Britten Boyer and Morrison Asia with 14 points each.

The Hornets improve to 11-4 on the season and will be back in action at the Highland Tournament January 12.

North Clay (Louisville) came calling and handed the Bombers a 61-51 loss. The Cardinals leaped out to a 25-13 opening quarter lead. Brownstown came back with a 17-15 second period run and a 14-11 third quarter score to pull within 51-44 going into the final period. But the Cardinals maintained control with a 10-7 final period run.

Mikayla Stanfield tallied 17 for the winners while teammates Morgan Walker scored 15 and Carrsan Bible 10.

Brownstown was led by Bethany Oberlink, a junior, with 16 points.

At Robinson

Newton improved its record to 13-6 on the season with a 55-28 victory over Robinson.

The Eagles led 28-16 at halftime then had a big 20-4 third period run to pull away. Morgan Swingler and Amy Bierman tallied 10 points each while Tara Wirth added nine, Emiliy Kerner eight and Carly Niebrugge eight in even scoring. Bierman led in rebounds with seven.

Emily Calip led Robinson with 12 and Ashley Sullivan chipped in with 11.
