Newton Named Dieterich Holiday Tourney Champion

DIETERICH -- Newton High School handed Oblong a 64-42 loss in the championship game of the Dieterich Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles connected on 26 of 44 field goals and six of 13 at the line while Oblong hit only 13 of 34 from the field and was 13 of 15 at the line.

Dylan Davidson led Newton with 20 points and six assists. Luke Stone tallied 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Derek Schackmann had 12 points, six assists and four steals.

In the third place game, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran edged Dieterich 67-62.

The fifth place game went to North Clay (Louisville) over Beecher City 64-58 in overtime.

The Cardinals held a 21-15 first quarter lead and led 33-26 at halftime. Beecher City came back with a 14-11 third period run to pull within 44-40 going into the final period. The Eagles then had a 14-10 run to knot the score at 54-54 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime session North Clay connected on three field goals and was four of four at the line to outrun Beecher City 10-4 and pull out the victory.

Logan Hilderbrand and Nathan Micklautz were the one-two scoring punch with 24 and 20 points respectively for the Cardinals.

Beecher City was led by Brady Barnes with 15 and Donnie Riley with 14.

In the seventh place game, Red Hill (Bridgeport) defeated Arcola 50-48.
