The Effingham Hearts defeated Oak Lawn Richards 44-41 Saturday morning at the Centralia Holiday Tournament and then lost the fifth place game to the host Centralia Orphans Saturday evening 55-38.  Both contests were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

The morning contest was close throughout, with the Hearts in front 13-12 after one quarter and in front at the half 25-22.  A 9-9 third quarter kept the Hearts ahead 34-31 and a 10-10 standoff in the final period accounted for the Hearts' three-point victory.

Effingham hit 18 of 39 shots in the morning game, but made just seven of 16 foul shots.  The Hearts grabbed 20 rebounds, committed 10 turnovers and made one of just four three-point tries.

Richards made 17 of 38 shots and only two of seven free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds and made four of 15 three-point attempts while turning the ball over 15 times.

Jake Stombaugh and Josh Stombaugh each scored eight points for Effingham, while Clark Williamson scored six, Kennan Mahaffey five, Alex Carie and Leighton Lark four each, Hunter Keith three, and Trenton Frey, Phil Knight and Marcus Robinson two each.

Maybe the morning contest took too much out of the Hearts, but the Saturday evening contest was not pretty.

It wasn't that Effingham shot the ball that poorly, making 17 of 35 from the field, but an inability to stop Centralia that decided the game and too many Hearts' turnovers.

Centralia made 20 of 31 from the field including seven of 11 from three-point land.  The Hearts made just one three-pointer in seven tries.  Perhaps it was the quickness of the Orphans that led to many more Hearts' fouls in the contest, 17 for Effingham to just six for Centralia.

Effingham scored the first six points of the game, but Centralia took over from there, outscoring the Hearts 13-4 for the rest of the quarter and 10-4 in the second quarter to lead 23-14 at halftime.  Centralia put up 21 in the third quarter, one of the few times this season that the Hearts have allowed that many points in a period, and led 44-29 at the end of the quarter before outscoring Effingham 11-9 in the fourth quarter.

Clark Williamson led Effingham with 13 points on six of eight shooting.  Also for Effingham: Leighton Lark eight, Hunter Keith and Marcus Robinson four each, Kennan Mahaffey three, and Josh Stombaugh, Trenton Frey and Phil Knight two each.

After going 1-1 on the day and 2-2 in the tournament, Effingham stands at 8-4 on the season and will be idle until heading to Paris for Apollo Conference play Friday night.

The Effingham cheerleaders captured the second place trophy after taking first place last year.
