Greenville College Women's Cage Team On to Nationals

Members of the Greenville College women's basketball team celebrate the NCCAA North Central championship.

GREENVILLE  -- Greenville College women's basketball team defeated Trinity Christian 71-63 Saturday afternoon to claim the NCCAA North Central championship for the second straight year and advance to the NCCAA national championships.

Greenville trailed 19-15 after the first quarter but used a 19-6 second period run to take a 34-25 advantage to halftime.

Trinity Christian made it a one point game after three quarters at 45-44, but Greenville held off its rally.  The Panthers outscored Trinity Christian 26-19 in the final quarter.

Meredith Crosier showed up when the Panthers needed her the most as she tallied a season-high 24 points in the game and a team-high nine rebounds.

Teammate Maria Reinhard dropped in 17 points and passed out four assists.

Four local players are members of the team. Jantzen Michael is a 5-foot-7 junior guard. She averages 5.1 points a game, 2.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals. Lauren  Stephenson is a 5-foot-9 senior forward. She averages 1.1 points a game. Sidney Webster is a 5-foot-9 freshman forward. All three players are from Effingham. Also a member of the team is Neoga's Ashley Dryden, a 5-foot-10 freshman forward.

The Panthers (21-6) will play at Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind., on Wednesday, March 14.
