Wooden Shoes' Season Ends w/One Point Loss

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes' basketball season got going Thanksgiving Week with a 72-70 victory in overtime over Mt. Carmel to win the Capital Classic.

Friday night, Mt. Carmel ended the Shoes' season with a 48-47 victory in the championship game of the Robinson Class 2A Sectional Tournament championship game.

Teutopolis had the lead throughout the first half, up 11-8 after one quarter and in front 24-18 at halftime. The Shoes had as much as an 11-point lead at one time.

Mt. Carmel began chipping away, though, hitting some threes to trim the lead. The Golden Aces took a one-point lead in the third quarter, but T-Town bounced back with five unanswered points to lead 38-34 after three quarters.

Mt. Carmel pushed back in front in the final period, though, outscoring Teutopolis 14-9. The Shoes' only basket in the fourth quarter was a Lee Hardiek three-pointer with less than 20 seconds left in the game to account for the final score. They were six of six from the line in the period, but Mt. Carmel was seven of nine from the line in that same quarter and made three of seven shots from the field.

Teutopolis shot 34% from the field, 15 of 44, including 3 of 15 on threes, but made just five of 21 shots in the second half. T-Town had a great night at the line, making 14 of 16 attempts. Despite the magnitude of the game, Teutopolis turned the ball over just eight times, with five of those coming in the first quarter.

Mt. Carmel hit 42% from the field, 15 of 35, including 4 of 10 threes. The Golden Aces, though, made 8 of 17 shots in the second half, just under 50%. They were 14 of 17 from the line, and committed 15 turnovers.

Lee Hardiek led Teutopolis with 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting. Clint Weber was in double figures with 12 points. Also for the Shoes: Ian Addis 7, Dawson Smith and Eric Kremer 4 each, Collin Funneman 3, and Collin Kreke 2.

Brayden Stipp scored 14 points, 10 in the third quarter, to pace Mt. Carmel. Blake Golden scored 12 points and Jackson Marcotte added 10 points. Also for Mt. Carmel: Bret Doan 7, Kaleb Applebey 3, and Austin Rager 2.

Teutopolis ends their season with a 22-9 record and says goodbye to seniors Eric Kremer, Ian Addis, Lee Hardiek, Landon Jansen, Collin Funneman and Collin Kreke.

Mt. Carmel is 20-11 and will play Pinckneyville at 7:30pm Tuesday at SIU Carbondale in the 2A Super-Sectional.
