A cold shooting night spelled the end of a wonderful basketball season for the Effingham Lady Hearts. Breese Central downed the Lady Hearts 37-31 in the Springfield 3A Super-Sectional Monday night. The game at UI Springfield was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Effingham trailed the entire game, as Breese Central led 12-7 after one quarter. A 6-6 standoff in the second quarter left the Lady Cougars up 18-13 at halftime. A 10-7 edge for Breese Central in the third quarter left them ahead 28-20 heading for the final quarter.

Effingham staged a few runs in the contest, but when they fell behind by 12 in the second half, it might have looked like the end. Not to the Lady Hearts, though. Effingham rallied and managed to cut the deficit to two on a corner three. Breese Central, however, was money at the foul line and maintained the lead start-to-finish, finally winning by six points.

Effingham made 13 of 32 shots, five of eight in the final quarter, or 40% including 2 of 6 threes. The Lady Hearts were just three of eight from the line, while Breese Central made 14 of 18 foul shots.

Breese Central made 11 of 33 shots, 33% including 1 of 12 on threes. Breese Central outrebounded the Hearts 25 to 16.

Carsyn Fearday led Effingham with 11 points, while Shelby Myers scored eight points on four of five shooting. Also for Effingham: Miranda Fox five, Abby Weis three, Bria Barr two, and Natalie Carie and Skyler Schafer one each.

Effingham finishes its record-breaking season with a 31-3 mark, the most-ever by a Hearts' varsity basketball team.

Breese Central, now 29-3, will play LaGrange Park at 12:45pm at  Redbird Arena at ISU in Bloomington.

Effingham says goodbye to seniors Bria Barr, Shelby Myers and Aly Armstrong.
