EHS Girls Win, Players Named All-Apollo; Oblong Wins Dieterich Regional

Effingham High School finished out regular season girls bsaketball action against Olney and downed the Tigers, 59-45 Saturday.

The Hearts took a 35-23 halftime lead and then held off Olney in the third period to lead 44-36. EHS then finished out strong with a 15-9 final period.

Carsyn Fearday tallied 17 while Abby Weis and Shelby Myers scored 10 each for the Hearts. Miranda Fox chipped in with nine.

The Hearts finished regular season play with a 26-2 record.

EHS won the Apollo Conference with an 11-1 mark followed by Charleston 10-2, Lincoln 9-3,  Mahomet-Seymour 5-7, Taylorville 4-6,  Mattoon 2-10 and Mount Zion 1-11.

Named to the All-Apollo Conference Team were Carsyn Fearday, Miranda Fox and Abby Weis. Fearday was named Co-Most Valuable Player along with Paige Swango of Charleston.

Other team members were Kaelin Froebe (Lincoln), Shae Littleford (Charleston), Natalie Snyder (Taylorville), Leah Schneider (Lincoln), Erin Lenschow (Mahomet-Seymour) and Ashlyn Macdonald (Mattoon).

At Dieterich

Oblong High School captured the championship of the Class 1A Dieterich Girls Basketball Regional Friday.

Oblong claimed a 42-36 win over BrownstownSt. Elmo. The two teams were tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter. Oblong moved ahead 24-19 at halftime but BSE came back with an 11-8 third quarter to pull within 32-30 going into the final period. Oblong got back on track with a 10-6 final period.

Summer Johnson tallied 12 to lead Oblong while Nyah Laino and Abbie Dart had 10 each.

BSE was led by Dana Shelton with 11 points and Claire Wilhour with nine.

Oblong advances to the North Clay Sectional tonight to face Hume Shiloh in the second game at 7:30.  The opening contest features Atlamont against Bethany Okaw Valley at 6.

Three-point winners at Dieterich were Jennifer Robards (Dieterich) with 11, Abbie Dart (Oblong) with 10 and Summer Johnson (Oblong) with 8.
