T-town Second, Stew-Stras Third at State, Altamont Lutheran to Play For Third

WENONA -- Teutopolis Junior High School finished second in the Class 7-3A Boys State Basketball Tournament at Wenona Fieldcrest Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes faced Springfield Lincoln and stepped out to a 12-9 opening quarter lead. T-town trailed Springfield Lincoln 15-14 at halftime and 24-22 going into the final quarter. Lincoln then had a 7-4 run for the state title.

Brendan Niebrugge scored 11 points and Caleb Siemer 10 for the Shoes who finish the season with a 25-3 record.

T-town players and coaches will have a welcome home reception Sunday. The team will have a fire truck ride and parade through Teutopolis beginning at 1 p.m. They will return to Teutopolis Junior High School for a brief ceremony at 1:30. There will be a cake and punch reception at 2 p.m.

Sprignfield Lincoln finished the season with a 21-2 mark.

The third place contest between Glenwood Brookwood and Farmington Central was delayed.

Class 7-1A State Tournament

Stewardson-Strasburg captured third place at the Class 7-1A State Tournament at East Peoria Central Junior High School Thursday.

Stew-Stras took the early lead over Mazon-Verona-Kinsman and pushed it to 22-12 at halftime. Stew-Stras then held M-V-K scoreless in the third quarter while pushing its lead to 35-12.

Two players hit double figures for the winners. Austin Wittenberg led the way with 17 points while Jordan Wittenberg added 17. Stew-Stras ends the season with a 24-2 record.

Mazon-Verona-Kinsman finished the season at 16-8.

In the championship game, Lovejoy won over Washington St. Patrick, 44-22.

Class S State Tournament

Altamont Lutheran fell in the SIJHSAA Class S State Tournament at Rend Lake College Thursday evening.

Lutheran squared off against unbeaten Carrier Mills and was tied at halftime, 27-27. Altamont Lutheran moved into a 35-34 lead going into the final quarter. But Carrier Mills went to the free throw line connecting on nine of nine and outscored Lutheran 18-9 for the 52-44 victory.

Altamont Lutheran was led by Noah Klimpel with 13 points and Quinn Verdeyen with 12. The squad drops into the third place contest Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Steeleville, a 52-46 loser to Bartelso.

Carrier Mills improved to 30-0 and will face Bartelso at 4 p.m. Saturday for the state title.
