Altamont Downs North Clay to Win Own 1A Regional Championship

The Altamont Lady Indians defended their home turf and won their 1A Regional championship title Thursday night, downing North Clay 56-51.

It was a close contest throughout the game. Altamont led the Lady Cardinals 15-12 after one quarter, but North Clay fought back to tie the game 26-26 at the half. 

The third quarter was the turning point, though, as the Lady Indians outscored North Clay 14-5 in the period to take a 40-31 lead into the final period. North Clay outscored Altamont 20-16 in the quarter, but it wasn't quite enough as Altamont won the game by five.

Leah Mayhaus led the way for Altamont with 17 points. Also in double figures were Mary Guse with 11 points and Brooke Runge with 10 points. Also for the Lady Indians: Shelbi Stone 7, Allyson Hardiek 6, Tinley Mette 3 and JoAnna Schultz 2.

Madison Lovett led North Clay with 18 points, while Taylor Jones scored 13 points. Also for the Lady Cardinals: Cassidy Coble 7, Madi Craig 5, and Darcy Fender and Audrey Fleener 4 each.

Altamont will advance, ironically, to the North Clay 1A Sectional to take on Bethany Okaw Valley Monday at 6pm. Okaw Valley beat Central A&M 52-38 to win the Chrisman Regional. At 7:30pm Monday, Hume Shiloh who beat Nokomis 48-38 to win the Nokomis Regional, will take on tonight's Dieterich Regional winner between Oblong and Brownstown/St. Elmo.
