Altamont, North Clay Advance To Girls Regional Championship

ALTAMONT -- Altamont and North Clay (Louisville) advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A Altamont Girls Basketball Regional with victories Wednesday evening.

Altamont opened with a 66-42 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Indians took a 19-9 opening quarter lead as six players scored led by Leah Mayhaus with six points. That lead was pushed to 40-21 at halftime as JoAnna Schultz scored eight points while Shelbi Stone and Mayhaus contributed five points each.

Four players finished in double figures for the winners. Mayhaus led the way with 16 points while Stone added 15, Schultz 12 and Mary Guse 12.

CHBC was led by Madison Cherry with 10 and Jaelyn Robertson with nine.

"We had a good season for as young as we are," said CHBC Coach Carolyn Wendte. "We learned a lot and now back to the drawing board this summer. There is one thing about this team, they never gave up and would always hustle."

In the second contest, North Clay ended Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's season with a 58-45 victory.

The Cardinals ripped off to an 18-5 opening quarter lead. WSS came back with a 15-13 second period to trail 31-20 at halftime But North Clay got back on the winning track with a 17-12 third period.

Audry Fleener and Madison Lovett tallied 14 points each for the Cardinals while Madi Craig chipped in with 12.

WSS was led by Megan Schlechte with 24 points. Katrina Davis tallied nine.

Altamont and North Clay will square off tonight for the regional championship at 7.

Class 2A  Casey-Westfield Regional

Newton's season came to a close in the second game of the evening at the Casey-Westfield Regional against host Casey-Westfield.

Newton took the early 11-6 lead and held a 16-13 halftime lead. But Casey-Westfield came back with a 28-22 second half to pull out a 41-38 victory.

Two players finished in double figures for the Eagles. Abby Frohning tallied 15 while Allison Harris scored 11. Frohning led in rebounds with seven, assists with five and steals with four. Brooke Jansen had four rebounds and three assists. Harris finished with three assists.

The Eagles end the season with a 15-13 record.

In the opening game, Marshall was a 46-36 winner over Robinson.

Marshall will now meet Casey-Westfield tonight at 7 for the regional championship.
