VANDALIA -- Teutopolis High School was focused as it handled Effingham St. Anthony in the Class 2A Vandalia Girls Basketball Regional Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes ripped off to a 8-0 lead in the opening quarter but despite never giving up, St. Anthony couldn't overcome that onslaught and fell, 50-25.

T-town connected on nine of 14 from the field in the first quarter as Jolene Bueker didn't miss a field goal, hitting three of three and was two of two at the line for her eight points. Meanwhile, Marianna Hemmen also didn't miss a shot, finishing with six points as the Shoes led 20-5 at the end of the quarter.

Although the Shoes slowed down in the second period, with only four of 15 from field goal range, St. Anthony only got off six shots and trailed 29-11 at halftime.

"We came out fast and never let St. Anthony get going," said T-town Coach Laurie Thompson. "The girls were focused and played good defense."

The Shoes finished with two players in double figures as eight scored in the contest. Hemmen led the way with 11 points while J. Bueker chipped in with 10. Sadie Bueker was on the verge of double figures with nine. The Shoes were owners of the boards with a 30-16 margin.

Another big factor was in the turnover department. T-town let loose of the ball only seven times in the game while their legendary defense pushed the Bulldogs into 16 and kept them offensively frustrated with only nine of 31 shots for 29 percent.

St. Anthony was led by Claire McHugh with eight points and Meg Richards with seven.

"We played a pretty good defensive game," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We just struggled with their press the first two or three minutes of the first and third quarters. I am proud of their effort especially in the second half. Thank you to three great seniors, Maryann Saba, Olivia Clausius and Keri McGuire. They have done a lot for our program."

In the second game, Pana handed Vandalia a 66-41 loss.

T-town will face Pana at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship. The winner advances to the St. Anthony Sectional Monday against the winner of the Mount Carmel Regional at 7:30 p.m.
