St. A, Dieterich, CHBC Advance in Girls Regionals

VANDALIA -- Effngham St. Anthony High School stepped out early on Shelbyville in the Class 2A Vandalia Girls Basketball Regional and went on for a 54-32 victory Monday evening.

Clare McHugh got the Bulldogs on the right track in the opening quarter. The 5-foot-9 junior connected for eight of the Bulldogs' 11 points in the quarter.

Olivia Clausius took over in the second quarter with six points for a 29-17 halftime lead.

McHugh then tallied six in the third period as the Bulldogs pushed way ahead, 46-21.

Three players finished in double figures for St. Anthony. McHugh led the way with 14 while Meg Richards scored 13 and Clausius 11. Clausius led in rebounds with 10 while Richards had seven and Shea Kinkelaar six. Keri McGuire had five assists and Sydney Gibson four.

The Bulldogs improve to 13-16 and will be back in action tonight taking on Teutopolis at 6 p.m.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Dieterich picked up a first round contest in its own regional by beating Palestine/Hutsonville, 48-30.

Dieterich edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 22-13 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons had a 21-7 third period.

Only one player finished in double figures for the Maroons. Jennifer Robards tallied 10 points and had five steals. Gracie Britton, Anna Shadle and Andrea Bierman scored nine points each. Cassie Vahling led in rebounds with 13. Shadle and Bierman had four assists each. Britton and Vahling had four steals each.

The Movin' Maroons advance to face second-seeded Oblong at 6 p.m. today followed by Brownstown/St. Elmo against Neoga at 7:30.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened the Altamont Regional by downing Ramsey, 53-46.

CHBC took a 15-10 opening quarter lead then led 28-21 at halftime. Jaelyn Robertson led the way in the opening quarter with eight points while Mackenzie Bunch took over in the second period with eight points.

Ramsey came back with a 15-12 third period to pull with four going into the final quarter. But the Bobcats got back on track with a 13-10 final period run. Robertson scored eight and finished with 18 for the game. Bunch chipped in with 13.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg easily handled South Central, 53-7.

The Hatchets took a 35-3 halftime lead. Megan Schlechte, a 5-foot-11 junior, scored 17 points while Hannah Hayes added 15.

South Central was led by Katlyn Hilmes with three.

The regional continues Wednesday with Altamont taking on CHBC at 6 p.m. followed by North Clay (Louisville) against WSS at 7:30.

Class 2A  Casey-Westfield Regional

Cumberland's season came to a close with a 45-24 loss to Robinson Monday evening.

Robinson edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead but the Pirates led 17-15 at halftime. Robinson then came out in the third quarter with an 18-2 run and put the game away.

Kendra Boswell led Cumberland with seven points.

Robinson advances to face Marshall Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by Newton taking on Casey-Westfield at 7:30.
