Mustangs Claim Two Victories in Junior High Boys Play

OLNEY -- Effingham Junior High School picked up two wins over Olney in seventh and eighth-grade boys basketball play Thursday evening.

In the seventh-grade game, Effingham ran its season record to 8-4 with a 38-36 victory. Olney jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead and led by as many as 12 in the third period before the Mustangs started their comeback. Effingham took its first lead of the second half with about 20 seconds remaining. However, Olney quickly countered and tied the score.

Ryan Sandifer then took the in-bounds pass and took the ball straight to the bucket, scoring the winning basket with about a second remaining. Sandifer finished the game with 22 points. The Mustangs host Altamont Thursday.

In the eighth-grade game, Effingham pounced on the Tigers early for a 29-21 halftime lead and then had a 29-16 third period run and finished out with a 71-46 victory.

Wolfe led the way with 30 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists while Donaldson added 17 points and Beals 10. The Mustangs improve to 12-1 on the season.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday when they host Altamont.

At Neoga

Stewardson-Strasburg picked up two wins over Neoga.

In the seventh-grade contest, Stew-Stras was a 36-18 winner with a 12-4 second period run. Kramer tallied 12 while Thies and Quast added seven each. Neoga was led by Andrews and Hill with four each. Stew-Stras is now 5-2 in the National Trail Conference, 11-5 overall.

In eighth-grade play, Stew-Stras was a 41-22 winner. Stew-Stras was a 19-4 leader at halftime. Overbeck tallied 22 and Moschenrose 11 for the winners. Moran led Neoga with 11. Stew-Stras is 5-3 in the conference, 6-8 overall.

At Mulberry Grove

Altamont picked up victories over Mulberry Grove in junior high action Thursday.

In seventh-grade action, Altamont won 45-10. Armstrong tallied 12 for the winners while Finn added nine.

Altamont was a 25-16 winner in eighth-grade play. Altamont held only an 11-10 lead at halftime then had a 14-6 second half run. Pemberton tallied eight for the winners. Wright led Mulberry Grove with six.

Beecher City, Newton St. Thomas split wins. St. Thomas was a 23-10 winner in seventh-grade play.

St. Thomas held an 11-7 first half lead then outscored Beecher City 8-0 in the third quarter. Beecher City was led by Joseph Galloway with seven.

In the eighth-grade game, Beecher City downed St. Thomas 40-19. Mason Stewart tallied 13 and Dalton Strauch 11 for the winners.
