CHBC, Newton Nab Girls Basketball Wins

SANDOVAL -- It was a 12-4 opening quarter as Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City High School went on to beat Sandoval/Odin 56-43 in girls basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats led 28-15 at halftime then held off the Blackhawks in the second half.

CHBC had two players in double figures. Carsen Burks, a freshman, led the way with 13 points while sophomore Jaelyn Robertson chipped in with 11. Tabitha Endsley led the team in rebounds with 11 while Kylee Bertin pulled down eight. Hailey Persinger and Burks had three assists each. Robertson led in steals with seven.

CHBC downed Sandoval, 47-23, in junior varsity action.

At Palestine

Newton stepped out to a 10-5 opening quarter lead and went on for a 29-27 win over Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening.

The Eagles held a 29-13 halftime lead. Josie Grunloh led the way for Newton with 13 points. She hit five field goals and was three of three at the line.

Claire Carr led Newton in rebounds with six while Abby Stone added five. Brooke Jansen led in steals with six while Grunloh and Taylor Smith had three each.

Newton improves to 15-11 on the season and will conclude regular season play Thursday at Casey-Westfield in a Little Illini Conference matchup.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity game, 33-9.

At Palestine

At Martinsville

Martinsville played host to Dieterich in a non-conference contest and claimed a 46-42 victory.

Dieterich took the early lead 12-5 in the opening quarter but the Bluestreaks came back with an 18-9 second period and then had a 12-2 third quarter. Dieterich made a comeback bid with a 19-11 final quarter but couldn't get over the hump.

The Movin' Maroons were led by Gracie Britton with 16 and Anna Shadle with 12. Cassie Vahling pulled down eight rebounds. Kaitlyn Bloemer had three assists and three steals. Britton led in steals with seven.

Dieterich drops to 8-18 on the season.

At Martinsville

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran took a 16-4 opening quarter lead and went on to pound South Central, 62-18.

The Cougars connected on only six field goals, that included one three-pointer, and was five of seven at the line. Sydnee Garrett led South Central with five points.

South Central drops to 2-12 on the season and is back in action Thursday at Wayne City.
