EHS Claims Girls Cage Win, Area Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Mount Zion in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Saturday and picked up a 45-29 victory.

The Hearts sailed out to a 16-5 opening quarter lead but the Braves came back in the second period to pull within 23-17 at halftime. EHS then had a 10-5 third period and a 12-7 final quarter.

"We finished off a rough patch of games playing 10 times in 13 days," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "So I felt good with the way we finished. Shane has done a good job with his team since we played last. We had good balance again as everyone did their jobs."

Carsyn Fearday scored 11 points and had three trifectas while Miranda Fox added 10 and had five rebounds. Fox hit one field goal and was eight of 10 at the line. Skyler Schafer and Shelby Myers had four rebounds each. Natalie Carie finished with three assists. Aly Armstrong had five boards.

The Hearts improve to 23-2 on the season and will host Mattoon Thursday in another Apollo Conference contest.

Effingham St. Anthony traveled to Paris for a non-conference contest and lost to the homestanders, 47-36.

Paris took an 18-14 halftime lead then had a 29-22 second half.

Two players hit double figures for the Bulldogs. Shea Kinkelaar led the way with 14 points while Olivia Clausius scored 13.

North Clay (Louisville) came calling for a National Trail Conference contest and downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 50-35.

The Cardinals held a 30-13 halftime lead then held off CHBC in the second half.

CHBC was led by Tabitha Endsley with 12 points.

Newton traveled to Pana and dropped a 69-48 contest.

The Panthers took a 16-15 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 36-22 at halftime. Pana had a 26-15 third period.

Newton was led by Abby Frohning with 16 points and Claire Carr with 11. Carr pulled down nine rebounds and Brooke Jansen had four. Frohning led in steals with five and Josie Grunloh had four.

Newton drops to 14-11.

Newton won the junior varsity contest, 36-33.
