Newton Advances to LIC Consy Championship

CASEY -- Newton High School edged Lawrenceville 62-61 in the Little Illini Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday to advance to the consolation championship.

The Eagles took an 11-10 opening quarter lead but Lawrenceville came back with a 26-13 second period to lead 36-24 at halftime.

Newton came out in the second half with a 21-9 third quarter to pull within 50-45 going into the final period. Jack Chapman scored nine points while Tucker Rieman connected on two three-pointers.

Then in the final period, Chapman hit a three-point shot and was six of seven at the free throw line for another nine points and the Eagles pulled out the victory. Newton hit 10 of 15 from the free throw line.

Chapman finished with 23 points while Collin Harris and Nick Cohorst scored 13 each. .

In the opening game Wednesday, Olney downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 56-39.

Newton will take on Olney at 5 p.m. Friday for the consolation championship. In the third place game Friday, Marshall faces Flora at 6:30. The championship will have Casey-Westfield against Robinson at 8.
