EHS, St. A, Neoga, N. Clay Nab Girls Wins

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School started a busy week of girls basketball games by edging Taylorville, 63-62 in Apollo Conference play Monday evening.

The Tornadoes edged out to a 17-16 first quarter lead and led 35-30 at halftime. The Hearts pulled within 48-45 going into the final quarter then had an 18-14 run to pull out the one point win.

Miranda Fox led the Hearts with 14 points and seven rebounds. Aly Armstrong chipped in with 12 points while Carsyn Fearday added 11 and Shelby Myers 10. Armstrong connected on four three-pointers.

The Hearts improve to 7-0 in the Apollo Conference and 20-1 overall.

EHS returns to action today against Lincoln in another Apollo Conference matchup. Lincoln comes in with a 5-1 conference mark and a 16-7 overall record.

The Hearts will continue the tough week traveling to Cahokia Thursday and then playing host to Teutopolis Friday.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony had an easy time in National Trail Conference play against South Central Monday evening. The Bulldogs captured a 54-6 win.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 19-2 opening quarter lead and that was the game.

Two players hit double figures for St. Anthony, Clare McHugh with 16 and Shea Kinkelaar with 12. McHugh led in assists with four while Kinkelaar led in steals with five. Sydney Gibson pulled down seven rebounds.

"This was a good game for us to relax after the tough loss on Saturday night," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We needed a confidence booster."

The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 in the National Trail Conference, 10-15 overall and won't return to action until Saturday at Paris at 11 a.m.

St. Anthony dropped a junior varsity contest to Breese Mater Dei, 48-29.

At Cowden

Neoga ran off to an 18-8 opening quarter lead and then had to hold off Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City for a 56-51 National Trail Conference victory Monday.

Neoga led 33-20 at the half. CHBC came back with a 31-23 second half.

Blair Banning led the Indians with 15 points while Jessica Atwell added 10.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson and Lauren Wojcik with 15 each.

Neoga improves to 11-14 on the season and will host Altamont in Senior Night festivities next Monday.

Newton fell in Little Illini Conference action to Marshall, 44-27, Monday evening.

The Eagles held an 8-7 opening quarter lead but Marshall came back to lead 23-20 at halftime and 38-23 going into the final quarter.

Newton was led by Abby Frohning with 14 points. The Eagles fall to 3-3 in the conference, 14-9 overall. They return to action Thursday hosting Olney during Senior Night and Pack the Place Night.

Marshall also nabbed the junior varsity game, 29-24.

North Clay (Louisville) picked up a 54-25 National Trail Conference victory over Dieterich Monday.

The Cardinals broke an 11-11 opening quarter tie with a 27-6 second period and never looked back.

Three players hit double digits for the Cardinals. Audrey Fleener led the way with 16 while Maddie Craig and Chloe Lewis added 10 each.

Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle with eight points. Kaitlyn Bloemer had six rebounds. Gracie Britton and Shadle had two assists each. Andrea Bierman led in steals with three. The Maroons drop to 0-5 in the conference, 6-17 overall.

North Clay won the junior varsity game, 44-33.
