Effingham St. Anthony played host to Newton and picked up freshman and sophomore wins Saturday.

The Bulldogs won the freshman contest, 73-33. St. Anthony didn't waste any time, taking a 24-8 opening quarter lead.

Four players hit double digits for the Bulldogs. Seth Hotze led the way with 11 while Kennan Walsh, Logan Antrim and Justin Ruholl scored 10 each.

Newton was led by Dossery with 12 and Einhorn with nine.

In the sophomore contest, St. Anthony won, 75-52.

The Bulldogs moved into a 22-9 opening quarter lead but Newton came roaring back in the second period to pull within 38-32. St. Anthony then had a 37-20 second half run.

Connor Walk led the way for the Bulldogs with 19 while Kayden Fearday scored 16, Jack Elder 15, Jack Hoene 12 and  Aaron Webb 10.

Newton was led by Jarrett Tharp with 16, Justin Zumbahlen with 15 and Kyle Schafer with 10.

At Taylorville

Effingham fell to Taylorville in a freshman/sophomore girls game Saturday, 40-34.

Both teams scored 11 in the opening quarter before the Tornadoes moved ahead 24-20 at halftime then held a 35-24 third quarter.

The Hearts were led by Armstrong with 12 points and Carie with nine.
