Hearts Win, Shoes Lose Saturday Night at Salem

The Effingham Hearts defeated Thornton Fractional North 78-53 in the seventh place game of the Salem Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon while the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes saw a big comeback fall short as Troy Triad defeated the Shoes 46-44 in the consolation championship game Saturday night.

EFFINGHAM 78, THORNTON FRACTIONAL NORTH 53

The Hearts blew open a close game after one player for each team was knocked out of the game due to injury on consecutive plays. Effingham had seen a double-digit lead dwindle to three early in the third quarter before Cole Marxman was injured and helped off the floor after making contact with a teammate. The next player, Thornton Fractional North lost Mike Oray, Jr. due to injury. 

When play finally resumed, the Hearts exploded, leading 50-36 at the end of the period and then outscoring the Meteors 28-17 in the final quarter to win by 25 points.

Effingham made half its shots, 22 of 44 including 4 of 9 threes. The Hearts went to the foul line 38 times and made 30 of them, grabbed 25 rebounds and turned the ball over 16 times.

T.F. North made 23 of 56 shots including 2 of 15 threes, made 7 of 13 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds and committed 24 turnovers.

Landon Wolfe and Mason Hull combined for 60 points, 33 for Wolfe and 27 for Hull. Also for Effingham: Ryan Sandifer 6, Matthew Robinson 5, Cole Marxman 4, and Parker Wolfe 3.

The Hearts snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 9-11.

TROY TRIAD 46, TEUTOPOLIS 44

The Shoes trailed most of the game before fighting back to tie the game, but Triad hit two foul shots just ahead of the buzzer to secure the win.

Triad led 14-12 after one quarter, led 26-19 at halftime, and were up 38-24 after three quarters before Teutopolis began a huge comeback that fell just short. The Shoes outscored Triad 20-8 in the final quarter.

Neither team shot well for the game. Teutopolis made 16 of 46 shots, 35%, including 6 of 21 threes. Triad made 15 of 45 shots, 33%, including 3 of 16 threes. The Shoes troubles at the foul line sank them in this game, making just 6 of 17 attempts. Triad made 13 of 15. The teams were even on the boards, 28 rebounds apiece. The Shoes turned the ball over 13 times, Triad 11 times.

Clint Weber and Lee Hardiek each scored 10 points to lead Teutopolis, while Dawson Smith scored 8 points, Eric Kremer 5, Collin Funneman 5, Collin Kreke 3, and Landon Jansen 3.

Teutopolis slipped to 14-5 on the season, while Triad is even on the campaign at 10-10.

Winning the championship was Salem over Mount Vernon 51-48. Third place went to Centralia over Edwardsville 76-53.
