The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes got by the Effingham Hearts 59-54 Saturday in action at the Salem Invitational Tournament. The contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The game was quite a battle with neither team leading by more than six points.

The first quarter was a see-saw affair with Effingham leading 11-10 after the first quarter. The Shoes had a 25-23 lead at halftime and led 39-38 after three quarters.

On a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter, Teutopolis took a six-point lead, but Effingham battled back to take a two-point lead and pulled back to within one. Effingham was down three and had the ball within the final 15 seconds, but failed to score and Teutopolis canned two foul shots to push the final margin to five.

Teutopolis started stone cold from the field, just 4 of 15 in the first quarter, but made 18 of 29 shots over the final three quarters to finish 22 of 44 for 50% including 4 of 14 threes. Effingham made 20 of 37 shots for 54% including 6 of 14 threes. The Shoes struggled from the line, making just 11 of 22 free throws for 50%, and Effingham made just 8 of 13 for 62%. Teutopolis outrebounded Effingham 22-15. Both teams handled the ball well in a very physical game, Effingham with nine turnovers, Teutopolis with just five miscues.
