ST. ELMO -- Stewardson-Strasburg captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

Stew-Stras handed Dieterich a 46-37 loss. Stew-Stras broke a 13-13 opening quarter tie with a 13-6 second quarter to lead 26-19 at halftime. The winners finished out with a 20-18 second half.

Wernsing led the way with 17 points while A. Wittenberg chipped in with 10.

Dieterich was led by B. Budde with 14 and Lidy with 12.

Stew-Stras won both the seventh and eighth grade NTC tournaments.

In the third place contest, Neoga handed North Clay (Louisville) a 35-29 loss.

In the consolation championship, Sigel St. Michael won over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 51-22.

The Sharpshooters took a 19-11 opening quarter lead and led 25-17 at halftime. St. Michael held CHBC scoreless in the third quarter for a 38-17 lead.

Croy tallied 28 for the winners.

CHBC was led by Jason Baylis with seven.

At Olney

Newton St. Thomas defeated Olney St. Joseph, 48-29 in seventh-grade action.

In the eighth-grade game, St. Thomas was a 49-34 winner.

Top scorers were Leo Weber and Jamee Zumbahlen with eight each.

 

At Palestine

Jasper County claimed two victories over host Palestine/Hutsonville Thursday evening.

Jasper County won the seventh-grade encounter, 38-15. Reynolds scored 13 points while Mahaffey added 12.

In eighth-grade action, Jasper County was a 36-20 winner. Meinhart led the way with 17 points.

James Burke Memorial Tournament

Aviston downed Hillsboro 44-36 while Greenville won over Salem 52-28 in the 70th Annual James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament in Greenville.

Tonight's games will feature St. Anthony against Triad at 5 for the consolation championship, HIllsboro against Salem at 6 for third place and Aviston taking on Greenville at 7 for the championship.
