EHS Girls Win, NTC, Highland, LIC Tourney Results

The 17th Annual Effingham High School Girls Basketball Tournament championship game will be decided tonight.

Effingham handed Vandalia a 59-35 loss Thursday evening and that puts the Hearts at 3-0 in the round robin affair along with Greenville. Those two teams will meet tonight at 7:30.

The Hearts ripped out to a 22-6 opening quarter lead on the Vandals and the game was over in the early going. The Hearts nailed 10 three-pointers in the contest led by Aly Armstrong with four.

Carsyn Fearday led three players in double figures with 19. She connected on eight field goals, that included one three-pointer, and was two of four at the line. Abby Weis tallied 13 and Armstrong scored 12.

In the opening contest, Greenville beat Centralia, 53-39.

In the other game tonight, Vandalia meets Pana at 6. Both Pana and Vandalia sport 1-2 records. Centralia finished the tournament with an 0-4 mark.

National Trail Conference Tournament

The finals are set for the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament after three games were contested Thursday evening.

In the opener, Altamont moved into the championship game with a 47-40 win over Neoga.

Altamont pushed into a 15-9 opening quarter lead and led 25-19 at halftime. Altamont held a 34-26 lead going into the final quarter. Neoga came back with a 14-13 run but it was too little, too late.

Altamont was led by Leah Mayhaus with 14 points and JoAnna Schultz with 12.

Neoga was led by Blair Banning with 15.

In the second game, North Clay (Louisville) downed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 62-50.

The Hatchets led 30-28 at halftime. But North Clay came back with a 15-9 third period run to lead 43-39 going into the final quarter then outscored WSS 19-11.

Madison Lovett tallied 27 points while Darcy Fender chipped in with 12 for the Cardinals.

WSS was led by Megan Schlechte with a whopping 31 points.

St. Anthony then dominated Brownstown/St. Elmo 61-37 to finish out the evening.

The Bulldogs had even scoring as four players hit the double digit mark. Megan Richards led the way with 14 points while Clare McHugh added 11 and Shea Kinkelaar and Sydney Gibson scored 10 each.

The Bulldogs led 35-14 at halftime.

Olivia Clausius led St. Anthony in rebounding with eight while Richards pulled down six.

"We rebouinded the ball real well tonight and solidified our great defense," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "If we can continue to play both ends together as a team, we will put ourselves in a position to try to get another tournament championship."

The finals are scheduled for Saturday with Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against North Clay at 4 p.m. for the consolation championship. Neoga will face Brownstown/St. Elmo at 5:30 for third place. Altamont and St. Anthony clash at 7 for the championship.

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis handed Breese Mater Dei a 43-39 loss in the 32nd Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 10-3 opening quarter lead as Sadie Bueker nailed a three-pointer and a free throw. The lead went to 26-18 at halftime on the strength of Macy Michels' six points.

Mater Dei came back with a 12-8 run in the third quarter to pull within four points. But the two teams played even in the final period.

Michels led the Shoes with 13 points while S. Bueker added 12 and Jolene Bueker chipped in with 10. J. Bueker led in rebounds with eight while Michels had seven. Marianna Hemmen had three steals. S. Bueker led in assists with four. Michels had three blocked shots.

In the other games, Okawville downed Nashville, 42-37 and O'Fallon beat Highland, 53-47.

The finals will be Saturday with Salem against Belleville West at 10 a.m. for the consolation championship, T-town taking on Okawville for seventh place at 11:30, Bethalto Civic Memorial meeting Highland at 1 p.m. for third place and Breese Central squaring off against O'Fallon for the championship at 2:30.

Newton claimed the consolation championship at the Little Illini Conference.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton High School captured the consolation championship at the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Eagles trailed Casey-Westfield 10-8 after the opening quarter and 19-16 at halftime. Newton came out to have a 33-25 second half and win, 49-44.

Abby Frohning, a 5-foot-9 senior, scored 21 for the Eagles.  Allison Harris added eight. Frohning led in rebounds with nine, assists with four and had two steals. Taylor Smith had seven boards. Harris had three assists and two steals.

Newton is 14-8 on the season.

In the third place contest, Marshall defeated Flora, 45-30. The championship went to Paris over Olney, 58-47.
