GREENVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony Junior High picked up a victory in the James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament at Greenville Wednesday evening while Effingham dropped from further tournament action.

The Bullpups trounced Roxana 46-8 in consolation bracket play.

St. Anthony ripped off to an 18-0 opening quarter lead and the game was put in the win column early.

All 10 players scored for St. Anthony led by Mendella with eight and Kemme with seven. The Bullpups are 11-9 on the season.

In the second game, Effingham lost a close contest to Triad, 28-24.

The Mustangs held a 12-9 opening quarter lead and led 16-9 at halftime. But Triad came back with an 11-2 third period and outscored EJHS 8-6 in the final quarter.

Matteson and Volpi scored eight points each for the Mustangs. Matteson pulled down 10 rebounds while Pals had six. Matteson, Pals and Volpi led the team in steals with two each.

In tonight's action, Hillsboro faces Aviston at 6 while Greenville takes on Salem at 7 in winner bracket play. The winners will square off for the championship at 7 p.m. Friday while the losers play for third place at 6.

The consolation championship, featuring St. Anthony against Triad, will be at 5 Friday.
