EHS Girls Down Pana; NTC, LIC, Highland Roundup

Coach Jeff Schafer's crew knocked down another victory at the 17th Annual Effingham Girls Round Robin Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

The Hearts pounded Pana 56-35 after Vandalia had opened the evening with a 36-32 win over Centralia.

Carsyn Fearday led the way for EHS with 20 points. She had a nine point second period and scored seven points in the third quarter. Also in double figures was Natalie Carie with 10. Aly Armstrong was on the verge of double figures with nine.

The Hearts held a 15-12 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 32-21 at halftime and 48-25 going into the final quarter.

EHS is 2-0 at the tournament along with Greenville while Pana is 1-2,  Vandalia 1-1 and Centralia 0-3.

Tonight's games feature Greenville against Centralia at 6 and Effingham taking on Vandalia at 7:30.

National Trail Conference Tournament

Altamont advanced in the winner bracket of the National Trail Conference Tournament Wednesday evening.

The top-seeded Indians led Dieterich 29-14 at halftime and had a 28-10 second half.

Two players scored in double figures as nine tallied points overall. Leah Mayhaus scored 15 while Tinley Mette had 12 for the winners.

Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle with 12.

In consolation games, North Clay (Louisville) pounded South Central 53-20. The Cardinals held a 21-5 first half lead.

Madi Craig tallied 13 points for the winners while Madison Lovett added 12.

South Central was led by Katlyn Hilmes with nine.

In the second consolation game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City defeated Dieterich 52-38.

The Movin' Maroons held a 10-5 opening quarter lead but CHBC came roaring back with a 19-5 second period to lead 24-21 at halftime. The Bobcats then had a 28-17 second half.

Jaelyn Robertson tallied 15 points for the Bobcats while Tabitha Endsley scored 14 and Carsen Burks 10.

Dieterich was led by Shadle with 19.

The tournament continues tonight as Altamont takes on Neoga at 5:30 in winner bracket play. Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg meets North Clay at 7 in consy action. The evening finishes out with St. Anthony against Brownstown/St. Elmo at 8 in winner bracket play.

The tourney comes to a close Saturday.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton advanced to the consolation championship of the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament with a victory Wednesday evening.

The Eagles downed Lawrenceville 55-29. Newton held a 25-17 halftime lead then went on a tear in the second half with a 30-12 run.

Claire Carr tallied 13 for the winners while Allison Harris added 11 and Abby Frohning 10.

Frohning, had five rebounds and five steals while Harris had five assists.

Newton improves to 13-8 and will play for the consolation championship Friday at 5 p.m. Flora will then take on Marshall for third place at 6:30. The championship features Olney meeting Paris at 8.

Highland Tournament

Three games were contested in the Highland Tournament Wednesday evening.

In the winner bracket contest, Breese Central edged Bethalto Civic Memorial, 39-36.

In consolation bracket action, Salem downed Carlyle 59-40 and Belleville West won over Hillsboro 51-47.

In tonight's games, Okawville takes on Nashville at 5 p.m. followed by Teutopolis against Breese Mater Dei at 6:30 and O'Fallon meeting Highland at 8.
