Flaming Hearts, Wooden Shoes Both Lose at Salem Tourney

The Effingham Flaming Hearts and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes will play each other at the Salem Invitational Tournament, but on Saturday morning, not Friday night as they might have hoped.

Centralia downed Effingham 70-55, while Mt. Vernon got by Teutopolis 55-48 in opening night action Wednesday. Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The Hearts and Shoes will play at 11:30am Saturday in a consolation bracket semifinal game. The winner will play at 7pm Saturday in the consolation championship game, while the loser will play at 4pm Saturday in the 7th place game. Each of those Saturday games will be heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

CENTRALIA 70, EFFINGHAM 55

Centralia led the contest 20-13 after the first quarter, but really took control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring the Hearts 25-13 to lead 45-26 at halftime. Effingham actually outscored the Orphans 29-25 in the second half, but the damage was done.

Centralia shot 61% from the field in the first half of this contest. They finished at 51% for the game, making 25 of 49 shots including 8 of 20 threes. The Orphans also made 13 of 16 foul shots, grabbed 21 rebounds, and turned the ball over just six times.

Effingham made 21 of 44 shots for 48% including 5 of 15 threes. The Hearts made 8 of 10 foul shots and grabbed 25 rebounds, but turned the ball over 16 times.

Landon Wolfe led the Hearts with 34 points on 13 of 23 shooting and shared rebounding honors with six. Wolfe's first point gave him 1,000 for his career halfway through his junior season. 

Mason Hull scored 17 points, 14 in the second half on 7 of 14 shooting with 4 rebounds. Cole Marxman and Ryan Sandifer each scored two points. Matt Robinson didn't score, but did grab six rebounds.

Javon Williams, Jr. also scored 34 points to lead Centralia on 12 of 18 shooting with 8 rebounds. Jordan Maines scored 22 points on 9 of 16 shooting.

The Hearts are now 8-10 on the season, while Centralia improved to 14-3.

MT. VERNON 55, TEUTOPOLIS 48

The Wooden Shoes had a tough time getting anything going offensively, but did finally take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Rams, though, bounced back and hit eight-of-eight foul shots in the final period to post the seven-point win.

Teutopolis was down 17-12 after one quarter and 30-24 at halftime, but battled back to tie the game at 39-39 after three quarters. Mt. Vernon bounced back to outscore the Shoes 16-9 in the final stanza for the win.

The Shoes made just 16 of 44 shots for 36% including 4 of 16 threes. They also made just 11 of 19 free throws. T-Town did a great job handling the ball, though, turning it over just four times.

Mt. Vernon, meanwhile, hit 55% of its shots, 21 of 38, going 5 of 16 on threes, but making 16 of 22 on twos. The Rams' eight-for-eight performance at the line in the fourth quarter followed an 0 for 3 effort over the first three periods. Mt. Vernon turned the ball over nine times. The teams produced a 19-19 standoff in rebounds.

Eric Kremer and Dawson Smith tallied 12 points each and Lee Hardiek and Clint Weber had 10 points each. Also for the Shoes: Ian Addis and Landon Jansen, 2 points apiece.

Zach Williams with 17 points, Weston Brockhouse with 16 points and Amir Spann with 14 points paced Mt. Vernon, now 8-5 on the season. Teutopolis slipped to 13-4 for the campaign.

Thursday at Salem, Salem will play Troy Triad at 6:30pm, while Edwardsville will take on Thornton Fractional North at 8pm.
