Shoes Drop Loss at Highland, Eagles Advance at LIC

HIGHLAND  -- Teutopolis High School saw its hopes for a championship at the Highland Girls Basketball Tournament go by the wayside Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes fell to host Highland, 44-36. The score was tied at 11-11 after the opening quarter but Highland edged ahead 20-19 at halftime.

Highland continued its momentum in the third period with a 15-9 run and finished out strong for the victory.

Sadie Bueker led the Wooden Shoes with 16 points. She was the lone T-town player in double figures. Jolene Bueker had 11 rebounds and six steals. S. Bueker had four steals. Morgan Mette had six rebounds.

In other games, Hillsboro beat Taylorville 52-46 and Belleville West downed Belleville Althoff 46-36 in consolation bracket play. In the other winner bracket contest, O'Fallon won over Breese Mater Dei, 40-37.

Tonight's games feature Salem against Carlyle at 5 followed by Hillsboro taking on Belleville West at 6:30 in the consolation bracket. In winner bracket play, Bethalto Civic Memorial will face Breese Central at 8 for the right to advance to the title contest.

Teutopolis will now face Breese Mater Dei at 6:30 p.m. Thursday after Okawville takes on Nashville at 5. O'Fallon meets Highland at 8.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton picked up a win in the Little Illini Conference Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Eagles claimed a forfeit win over Red Hill (Bridgeport). The Eagles will now face Lawrenceville tonight at 6 in the consolation bracket. In the second game, Casey-Westfield takes on Robinson at 7:30. The winners advance to the consolation championship game Thursday.

In winner bracket play, Olney edged Flora 40-39 and Paris downed Marshall 57-44. Olney will now square off against Paris at 8 p.m. Thursday for the championship. Flora will meet Marshall at 6:30 for third place.
