The National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament got underway Friday evening and continued Saturday.

In the opener Friday, Stewardson-Strasburg downed St. Elmo/Brownstown 39-28. Stew-Stras held a 20-13 first half lead. Stew-Stras then had a 15-2 third quarter.

Wernsing led Stew-Stras with 10 points. Smith led SEB with 17.

In the second game, Sacred Heart downed Windsor 35-31. The Shamrocks trailed Windsor 7-2 after the opening quarter. The score was tied at 13-13 at halftime.

The Shamrocks held a 19-17 lead going into the final quarter and had a 16-14 run to pull out the win.

Feldhake scored 16 points for the winners while Zerrusen chipped in with 13. Windsor was led by J. Collins with 10.

In the third contest, Dieterich defeated Altamont 48-28. No other results were reported.

In Saturday action, Stewardson-Strasburg downed Sigel St. Michael 47-41, Neoga won over South Central 48-28 and North Clay (Louisville) beat Sacred Heart 40-36. No other information provided on these games.

The final contest went to Dieterich over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 48-39.

Dieterich took an 8-2 opening quarter lead then led 18-10 at halftime. Both teams tallied 17 in the third quarter. Dieterich then finished out with a 13-12 final period.

Dieterich was led by B. Budde with 24 and Britton with 12. CHBC was led by Daniel Lucas with 11.

The tournament continues tonight with Sigel St. Michael against South Central at 6:15 and Sacred Heart facing CHBC at 7:30.

At Mattoon

Effingham St. Anthony picked up two victories against  Mattoon in action Saturday.

The seventh-grade squad was a 24-22 winner. The Bullpups trailed 6-3 after the opening quarter and 10-5 at halftime. St. Anthony was still behind 18-15 going into the final quarter.

The Bullpups then had a 9-4 run to pull out the two point win. Eli Levitt led the way with 11 points.

In eighth-grade action, St. Anthony was a 38-32 winner. The Bullpups trailed Mattoon 13-12 at halftime then took a 23-21 lead going into the final quarter. St. Anthony's Stewart nailed two baskets and was seven of eight at the foul line for 11 of his total 14 points in the final quarter.

Blanchette finished with 16 to lead the Bullpups. He scored four in the first half then came back with an 11-point third quarter.
