T'ville Edges EHS, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

TAYLORVILLE -- Taylorville High School held off a charging Effingham in boys baskeball action Tuesday evening for a 64-63 victory.

The Tornadoes held an 18-12 opening quarter lead as a new starter took control. Jase Bergschneider nailed two trifectas and a regular basket for eight points in the quarter.

The Hearts came back with an 18-15 second period to pull within 33-30 at halftime. Landon Wolfe nailed three baskets for six points while Mason Hull and Ryan Sandifer had four points each.

Taylorville's Bergschneider went to work in the third quarter, scoring two trifectas and four regular baskets for 14 of his team's 16 points. The Tornadoes led by seven going into the final quarter.

That's when Wolfe almost won the game for EHS. The 6-foot-5 junior connected on two three-pointers, a regular basket and was 11 of 12 at the free throw line for 19 points. The Hearts outscored Taylorville 21-15 and almost pulled out the win.

Wolfe finished with 36 points while Hull chipped in with 12. The Hearts drop to 3-2 in the Apollo Conference, 8-7 overall.

Bergschneider led Taylorville with 25 and Jordan Moats added 19. Taylorville improves to 3-2 in the conference, 8-5 overall.

Taylorville claimed the junior varsity contest 65-58.

At Toledo

Dieterich came out the winner in a double overtime contest against Cumberland, 75-71 Tuesday evening.

The Pirates took the early lead at 21-12 after the opening quarter and 28-24 at halftime. Dieterich came back with a 21-12 third quarter run as Ryan Radloff went on a tear, scoring 10 points. That pushed the Maroons into a 45-40 lead going into the final quarter.

Cumberland came back with a 17-12 final period, tying the game at 57-57 sending the game into overtime. In the first overtime period, both teams scored nine points each. Dieterich then took the game in the second overtime with a 9-6 tally.

Callaway Campton led the Maroons with 23 points while Radloff added 20 and Tyler Higgs 19.

Cumberland was led by Zach Wolke with 28 points while Tyson Magee added 24.

 At Windsor

South Central tallied a National Trail Conference victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg. The Cougars won 68-62.

South Central took an 18-11 opening quarter lead but WSS came roaring back with a 22-14 run to lead 33-32 at halftime. The Cougars came out after halftime with an 18-10 third period to lead 50-43. The Hatchets mounted a rally with a 19-18 run but fell short.

Trent Geiler led four players in double figures for the winners with 21 points. Logan Lotz and Hunter Brandt scored 13 each and Ryan McCown finished out with 11.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Chase Thies with 19 and Gavin Bennett with 13. The Hatchets drop to 1-2 in the NTC, 7-7 overall.

South Central picked up its first conference win and is 1-2 and stands at 8-8 overall.

The Cougars edged WSS 47-46 in the junior varsity contest.

St. Elmo/Brownstown tallied an Egyptian-Illini Conference win over Ramsey Tuesday evening, 74-39.

SEB took a 22-13 opening quarter lead and led 49-17 at halftime.

Lewis Brown went on a tear for the Eagles as he nailed nine of 17 from the field that included six of 10 from three-point range and was four of six at the line for 28 points.

Also in double figures for the winners were Nate Philpot and Andy Goldsborough with 13 each and Bryton Pruett with 10.

SEB now stands at 1-0 in the EIC, 11-4 overall.

Newton picked up a Little Illini Conference win over Hutsonville/Palestine Tuesday, 69-39.

The Eagles stormed out to a 24-4 opening quarter lead and the game was over early.

Collin Harris tallied 28 points, connecting on 11 field goals that included a three-pointer and was a perfect five of five at the line. Also in double figures was Zach Jansen with 15.

Newton improves to 3-1 in the conference and stands at 12-4 overall.

The Rams held a 24-12 opening quarter lead and had a 28-7 third period run. Miller led the way for the winners with 28 points while Pullen chipped in with 21 and Kull added 12.
