Frosh/Soph Boys Basketball -- Jan. 4

SALEM -- Effingham High School split victories in freshman/sophomore boys basketball competition Thursday in two close contests.

The Hearts won the freshman game 48-45. EHS edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead and led 21-17 at halftime and 40-36 going into the final period then held off the Wildcats for the win.

Max Woelfer tallied 15 for the Hearts while Drew Thompson had nine.

In the sophomore game, Salem led 9-7 after the opening quarter but the Hearts came back for a 19-15 halftime lead. EHS led by 15 points going into the final quarter.

The Wildcats then had a 29-12 final period spurt to pull out a 48-46 victory.

EHS was led by Aiden Beck with 15 points while Wyatt Jones and Sam Thompson had nine each.

At Mattoon

Teutopolis downed host  Mattoon 53-45 in freshman/sophomore action Thursday evening.

The Green Wave held a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 27-23 at halftime. T-town came back with a 12-6 third period and outscored the Green Wave 18-12 in the final quarter to pull out the 53-45 win.

The Shoes were led by three players in double figures. Evan Addis led the way with 21 points as he hit six field goals that included five three-pointers and was four of four at the line. Evan Wermert tallied 11 and Matthew Deters 10.
