Altamont, Dieterich, T-town, Newton Claim Girls Cage Wins

ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School pounded South Central 56-9 in National Trail Conference girls basketball action Thursday.

The Indians ripped off to a 24-1 opening quarter lead on a Cougar squad that has only seven players. Mary Guse went to work with eight points connecting on two three-pointers.

Tinley Mette led Altamont with 10 points while Jacie Hosick tallied nine, Allyson Hardiek and Guse eight each.

The Indians are unbeaten in the conference at 5-0 and stand at 15-4 overall. They moved into the state poll rankings in the others receiving votes category this week.

South Central was led by Sydnee Garrett with eight points.

At Dieterich

Dieterich tallied a 53-36 win over Ramsey in a non-conference matchup Thursday.

The Movin' Maroons stepped out to a 30-14 halftime lead. Anna Shadle was the leading scorer for the Maroons with 22 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds, had four assists and nine steals.

Cassie Vahling led in rebounds with 15. The Maroons are 4-12 on the season.

Dieterich also won the junior varsity  contest 35-17.

 At Teutopolis

Teutopolis ripped out to a 32-12 opening quarter lead on Salem and went on for an 86-31 victory Thursday.

Sadie Bueker cut loose with a 34 point performance for the Wooden Shoes. Bueker nailed 11 field goals that included six from three point range and was two of two at the line. She also had four assists, five rebounds and five steals.

No other Shoe player was in double figures but three finished with nine each and those included Jolene Bueker, Mariana Hemmen and Olivia Niemerg. Macy Mette contributed eight points and led in steals with six. Hemmen had four steals. J. Bueker had five assists. Niemerg had two blocked shots.

At Newton

Lawrenceville jumped out to a 9-1 lead before Newton fought back as Abby Frohning knocked in a three-pointer to tie the score at 15-15 in the opening quarter.

In the second period, Renae Russell and Allison Harris combined for 11 points to give the Eagles an eight point halftime lead. The fourth quarter came down to free throws as Lawrenceville fouled early to stay in the game. Frohning connected on 11 free throws as the Eagles hit all 17 of their final period trek to the line to claim a 55-51 victory.

Frohning finished with 26 points for the Eagles. Claire Carr chipped in with eight. Frohning also led in rebounds with 10, had three assists and three steals.

Newton is now 11-6 on the season.

The Eagles fell in the junior varsity contest 24-15.

Oblong played host to  Brownstown/St. Elmo and picked up a 50-37 non-conference victory Thursday.

Oblong led 19-9 after the opening quarter and 33-16 at halftime.

BSE had one player hit double figures. Claire wilhour had 16 points and six steals in the contest. Olivia Campbell had nine rebounds and seven steals.

The Maroons took a 21-16 halftime lead then had an 18-8 third quarter run to put the game away.

Liberty Dunaway tallied seven points to lead the Pirates.
