Chicago Corliss Wins Effingham-Teutopolis Christmas Classic

Led by Iowa State-bound George Conditt, the Chicago Corliss Trojans captured the championship of the 2017 Effingham-Teutopolis Christmas Classic with a 56-42 win over the Lincoln Way East Griffins.

As far as the area teams in this year's field, Teutopolis went 3-1 to capture third place honors at the tournament, while Effingham and Altamont each finished 2-2 with the Hearts losing the fifth place game to Mattoon 60-49 and the Indians winning the ninth place game over Madison 49-41.

Earlier in the day, Teutopolis lost to Corliss in gold pool play 53-48, Effingham won over Oaklawn 48-39 in silver pool play, and Altamont defeated Antioch 55-48 in bronze pool play.

Here's a complete rundown of Friday's scores at the tournament: 

At Teutopolis--Altamont 55, Antioch 48 (the Indians posted a 22-point third quarter to secure the win; Mitchell Stevenson poured in 35 points to lead Altamont; also for the Indians: Alex Biggs 8, Denver Duckwitz 5, Aiden Jahraus 4, Kolby Pemberton 3)

At Teutopolis--Madison 63, Charleston 58 

At Effingham--Effingham 48, Oak Lawn 39 (Landon Wolfe posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Hearts to the win; Mason Hull was also in double figures with 12 points; also for Effingham: Matthew Robinson 7 with 8 rebounds, Ryan Sandifer 4, Logan Smith 3, Cole Marxman 2)

At Effingham--Mattoon 68, Chicago Brooks 58 (OT)

At Effingham--Lincoln-Way East 53, Northwest Academy of Law 37

At Effingham--Chicago Corliss 53, Teutopolis 48 (the Wooden Shoes trailed by two after one quarter, by five at halftime, and by seven after three quarters; Lee Hardiek with 17 and Eric Kremer with 16 led Teutopolis in scoring; also for the Shoes: Dawson Smith 7, Ian Addis 6, Clint Weber 2)

11th Place Game--Charleston 71, Antioch 63

9th Place Game--Altamont 49, Madison 41 (Mitchell Stevenson scored 28 points to lead the Indians; also for Altamont: Alex Biggs 12, Aiden Jahraus 6, Denver Duckwitz 3)

7th Place Game--Oak Lawn 64, Chicago Brooks 40

5th Place Game--Mattoon 60, Effingham 49 (the Hearts lost despite Landon Wolfe's 32 points; also for Effingham: Mason Hull 8, Matthew Robinson 3, Ryan Sandifer, Logan Smith and Cole Marxman 2 each)

3rd Place Game--Teutopolis 53, Northwest Academy of Law 51 (this was a real battle; the Shoes were up 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, and 32-26 at the half, but Northwest Academy tied the game 43-43 at the end of three quarters; the Shoes finally outscored the Hornets 10-8 in the fourth quarter to win by two; Eric Kremer led T-Town with 17 points, while Lee Hardiek scored 13 and Dawson Smith scored 12 points; Clint Weber scored 7 points and Collin Funneman scored 4 points)

Championship Game--Chicago Corliss 56, Lincoln-Way East 42 (George Conditt led Corliss with 19 points including two monster windmill dunks; Lincoln Way East took the early lead with four threes by Brandon Petkoff in the first quarter, but Corliss held Petkoff scoreless the rest of the game, meanwhile coming back from seven down to win by 14)
