MATTOON -- Altamont High School picked up two victories while Effingham St. Anthony went 1-1 at the 39th Annual Mattoon Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

The Indians started the day with the opening game against Sullivan. Altamont edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead but trailed Sullivan 28-22 at halftime. The Indians were still behind going into the final quarter, 40-34, then had an 18-10 run to pull out the victory, 52-50.

Leah Mayhaus led the way for the Indians with 18 points. She hit six field goals and six free throws.

Altamont then claimed a 52-48 win over Salem. No other information was provided.

St. Anthony's first game followed Altamont's and the Bulldogs claimed a 39-36 victory over Vandalia.

The Bulldogs ran off to a 15-8 opening quarter lead and led 24-19 at halftime. St. Anthony still held a lead going into the final quarter, 34-27. Vandalia mounted a comeback in the final period only to fall short as the Bulldogs hung on.

Clare McHugh led the way with 13 points while Shea Kinkelaar chipped in with 10 for the Bulldogs.

"We played well in spurts but the most important thing is we played well the last 30 seconds to secure the win," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman.

In the Bulldogs' second contest, Mattoon claimed a 49-46 victory in overtime.

The Green Wave led 23-19 at halftime and 39-28 going into the final quarter. St. Anthony came to life as Meg Richards tallied eight points in the quarter and the Bulldogs sent the game into overtime with the score tied at 44-44.

In the overtime period, Mattoon had a 5-2 spread for the victory.

Richards led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Olivia Clausius added 11 points and nine rebounds.

"We had a great fourth quarter and had the ball with a chance to win at the end of regulation and the overtime and just couldn't connect," said Wiedman. "We really made some strides but need to continue developing through the next three games of this tournament."
