Effingham High School captured a girls freshman/sophomore contest over Mattoon Friday, 34-26.

The Hearts held a 19-13 halftime lead then held Mattoon scoreless in the third quarter.

Armstrong tallied 14 for the Hearts while Diveley added 12.

At Dieterich

Effingham St. Anthony nabbed a 49-28 win over Dieterich in freshman/sophomore boys basketball.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead then had an 11-3 second period run.

St. Anthony was led by Logan Antrim with 18 points. Dieterich was led by Westendorf with 10.

At Effingham

Effingham and Teutopolis split freshman/sophomore boys basketball wins Saturday.

In the freshman game, the Hearts picked up a 63-55 win. The Shoes led 13-9 after the opening quarter but Effingham came back to take a 26-22 halftime lead. The Hearts trailed 44-42 going into the final period then overtook the Shoes 24-11 for the win.

Parker Wolfe scored 25, Nate Thompson 18 and Drew Thompson 12 for the Hearts. T-town was led by Hardiek with 19 and Deters with 16.

In the sophomore contest, Teutopolis claimed a 54-44 victory.

T-town trailed Effingham 15-11 after the opening quarter and 27-25 at halftime. T-town then came back with a 19-10 third quarter to lead 44-37 and finished out with the win.

Pals and Hardiek scored 10 points each for the winners while Wermert added nine.

EHS was led by Aiden Beck with 15.
