Shoes Outlast Hearts 77-66

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes used a 27-point fourth quarter to defeat the Effingham Hearts 77-66 in Tuesday night boys basketball action at EHS Gym.

It was anybody's ballgame for the first three quarters. The Hearts led in the first few minutes, pushing the lead to six points before Teutopolis staged a run to come from behind and lead 19-14 after one quarter.

It was an even-steven middle portion of the game, though. Effingham outscored the Shoes 16-12 in the second quarter to trail by just one, 31-30 at halftime. Each team then scored 19 points in the third quarter to make it 50-49 Shoes headed to the final period. 

Teutopolis, though, in the fourth quarter hit six of 11 shots including 2 of 6 threes and made 11 of 14 foul shots to pull away even with the Hearts scoring 17 points in the period.

The Shoes hit half their shots, 24 of 48 including 5 of 20 threes. That means 19 of 28 on their twos. T-Town was also 20 of 27 from the line, committed 14 turnovers and grabbed 30 rebounds. Teutopolis had a 16-8 rebound edge in the second half.

Effingham made 45% of its shots from the field, 24 of 53 including 8 of 19 threes. The Hearts were 10 of 17 from the line, committed 15 turnovers and pulled down 23 rebounds.

Teutopolis finished with five players in the double figures, including Clint Weber with 18, Eric Kremer with 17, Ian Addis with 15, Dawson Smith with 13 and Lee Hardiek with 12. Collin Kreke scored the other two points.

Effingham was led by Landon Wolfe with 27 points while Mason Hull scored 22 points. Also for Effingham: Ryan Sandifer 9, Cole Marxman 6 and Logan Smith 2.

Teutopolis improved to 6-1 on the campaign, while Effingham is now even at 4-4.

Teutopolis won the JV game 46-28. Ungrund led T-Town with 10 points, while Tate Niebrugge paced Effingham with 7 points.
