Effingham High School's defense was the biggest equation in Saturday afternoon's victory over Effingham St. Anthony in girls basketball action as the Hearts put together a 46-20 victory.

The Hearts' constant swatting and stepping in front of passes pushed the Bulldogs into 15 opening quarter turnovers and that meant no score while EHS tallied 12.

"We knew they wanted to try and slow the game down," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "But we have lots of ballhandlers who are after the ball on defense and who can control the tempo. I always say I have a starting eight and it doesn't really matter who starts because they all get to play and contribute."

Natalie Carie was the main offense in the opening period for the Hearts with six points. EHS connected on six shots and had four turnovers. But along with the 15 turnovers, the Bulldogs put up a shot only twice in the period.

EHS pushed the lead to 13-0 to start the second quarter. St. Anthony cut way back on the turnovers and actually pulled within 10 points with 1:48 showing before halftime. But this time around it was Carsyn Fearday who steadied the EHS squad and scored eight points as the Hearts held a 23-8 halftime lead.

"They are a great team and have so many guards who can play well," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We held them to 46 points and probably about 26 of those points was from us turning over the ball on defensive pressure."

The Bulldogs came back in the third period and were only outscored by the Hearts 10-8. But EHS maintained control with a 33-16 lead going into the final period then put together a 13-4 run for the final tally.

"Natalie came in and sparked us in the first half," said Schafer. "These girls love to play and share the basketball.  They love playing together. We're just trying to get better every day."

The Hearts pushed their record to 6-0 on the season and will face tough Apollo Conference opponent Charleston Monday.

Fearday was the lone EHS player in double figures with 12. Carie chipped in with nine and Abby Weis added eight. EHS had 10 turnovers.

St. Anthony was led by Clausius with eight points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs had 31 turnovers in the contest and were eight of 25 from the field.

"We're seeing little positives," said Wiedman. "With Clare McHugh out with a twisted ankle, we'll just have to see where we go from here. Clausius did a great job finishing inside and is out most stable spot so far. Shea Kinkelaar also did a great job and has come a long way."

The Bulldogs drop to 3-5 on the season.
