Newton, C'land, Dieterich Pick Up Cumberland Tourney Wins

TOLEDO -- Newton High School opened the evening at the Cumberland Thanksgiving Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory.

The Eagles handed Altamont a 71-66 loss. Newton stepped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead as Cohorst nailed 10 points. Newton had a slight 18-16 second period to lead 35-24 at halftime.

The Eagles continued to outscore the Indians with a narrow 21-20 third period and led 56-44 going into the final quarter.. The final quarter run by Altamont pulled the Indians back within five points.

Newton was led by Cohorst with 29 points while Jansen chipped in with 17 and Harris added 10.

Altamont had a big one-two scoring punch in Stevenson with 26 and Biggs with 25.

In the second contest at the high school, Cumberland won over Edwards County (Albion), 73-67.

The two squads played to an 18-18 opening quarter tie. Edwards County moved ahead with a 21-18 second period but Cumberland came back within 56-54 in the third quarter as Tyson Magee tallied 12 points.

Cumberland then had a 19-11 final quarter, again as Magee connected on five field goals and three free throws for 13 points. The Pirates won by six.

Magee finished with 35 points as he hit 14 field goals, including one three-pointer, and was six of nine at the lline. Also in double figures were Zach Wolke with 20 as he hit four field goals, including two three-pointers, and was 10 of 11 at the line and Brennyn Cutts with 13.

In games at the junior high school, Casey-Westfield opened with a 72-51 victory over Oblong.

In the second game, Dieterich downed Oblong 58-36.

The Movin' Maroons stepped out to a 20-8 opening quarter lead and led 29-14 at halftime. The Maroons continued to pound away with an 18-12 third period and had an 11-10 final quarter.

Radloff tallied 24 for the winners while Higgs added 13. Radloff hit nine field goals, including three trifectas, and was three of four at the line.

Cumberland and Newton are 2-0 in Pool A while Edwards County and Altamont stand at 0-2. In Pool B, Casey-Westfield is 2-0 followed by Dieterich and Charleston at 1-1 and Oblong 0-2.

Action won't continue until Friday when four games are on tap and finish out Saturday with the finals.
